Homily: 🕊️ "The Sacrament of Holy Communion" - The Crown of All Sacraments.

🕊️ The Sacrament of Communion

The Crown of All Sacraments

🪔 1. Introduction

Dear brothers and sisters,

Today, we are entering into a very important truth of our faith.

We believe in seven sacraments—not as human inventions, but as divine channels of grace instituted by Jesus Christ.

These seven sacraments are like seven streams flowing from the pierced heart of Christ, nourishing the life of the Church.

But among these seven, there is one sacrament that is not just grace given…
but the Giver Himself.

That sacrament is Holy Communion.

Today, we are not just speaking about Eucharist as devotion,
But as one among the seven sacraments, yet the greatest, the centre, the summit, the fulfilment of all.

📖 2. Biblical Foundation

🔹 2.1. Christ Establishes Sacraments as Channels of Grace

Jesus did not leave us ideas—He gave us visible signs that communicate invisible grace.

  • Baptism → “Go and baptize…”
  • Forgiveness → “Whose sins you forgive…”
  • Communion → “Do this in memory of me…”

👉 Gospel of John 6:51–58

·        “The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world…
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.”

🔑 Key Insight:
Jesus does not speak symbolically—He insists repeatedly.
👉 Communion is real nourishment for eternal life

🔹 2.2. Institution of the Sacrament of Communion

At the Last Supper:

“Take and eat, this is my body…
Take and drink, this is my blood…”

This is not symbolic language.
This is the foundation of a sacrament.

👉 Gospel of Matthew 26:26–28
👉 Gospel of Mark 14:22–24
👉 Gospel of Luke 22:19–20

“This is my body… This is my blood… Do this in memory of me.”

🔑 Key Insight:
Not “this represents”—but “this is.”
👉 Jesus institutes the sacrament as a real, ongoing reality

🔹 2.3. Bread of Life Teaching (John 6)

Jesus prepares the Church for this sacrament:

“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.”

This is not optional spirituality.
This is necessary nourishment.

👉 First Letter to the Corinthians 10:16–17

“The cup of blessing… is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?”

🔑 Key Insight:
👉 Communion is sharing in Christ Himself, not a symbol
👉 It creates unity in the Church

2.4. Worthy Reception – Serious Warning

👉 First Letter to the Corinthians 11:23–29

“Whoever eats and drinks unworthily… eats and drinks judgment upon himself.”

🔑 Key Insight:
👉 Confirms real presence (otherwise no judgment)
👉 Calls for preparation and reverence

📖 2.5. Old Testament Prefigurations (Foreshadowing)

👉 Book of Exodus 16 (Manna in the desert)
👉 Book of Genesis 14:18 (Melchizedek offering bread and wine)

🔑 Key Insight:
👉 These are shadows pointing to the Eucharist
👉 God prepares humanity gradually

🕯️ 3. Core Theme

The Sacrament of Communion is:

  • The fulfilment of all sacraments
  • The presence of Christ Himself
  • The source and summit of Christian life

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju Original Insights

“The seven sacraments are not seven destinations, but seven divine movements guiding the soul toward one encounter—Communion.”

“Every sacrament prepares the human heart, but only Communion fulfils the hunger of the heart.”

“If Baptism gives us life and Confession restores life, Communion becomes the very food that sustains that life.”

🕊️ Saint’s Voice

Thomas Aquinas:

“The Eucharist is the sacrament of love; it signifies love, it produces love.”

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju – Poetic Reflection

Seven streams from grace divine,
Flowing toward one sacred sign.
In that Bread, all journeys meet,
Where God and human hearts are complete.

🔥 4. Theological Depth

🔸 4.1. The Seven Sacraments – A Journey

The seven sacraments are not random.
They form a spiritual journey:

  1. Baptism – Birth
  2. Confirmation – Strength
  3. Confession – Healing
  4. Communion – Nourishment
  5. Marriage – Mission of love
  6. Holy Orders – Service
  7. Anointing of the Sick – Final healing

👉 But notice:

All sacraments lead toward Communion.

Communion is not one among equals—it is the centre where all meet.

🔸 4.2. Why Communion is the Greatest Sacrament

Other sacraments give grace.
But Communion gives Christ Himself.

  • In Baptism → we receive grace
  • In Confession → we receive forgiveness
  • In Communion → we receive the Living God

This is why it is called:

👉 The Blessed Sacrament

🔸 4.3. Communion as Union (The Meaning of the Word)

“Communion” means:

  • Union with Christ
  • Union with the Church
  • Union with one another

It destroys:

  • Isolation
  • Division
  • Sin

And creates:

  • Unity
  • Love
  • Divine life

🔸 4.4. Communion as Spiritual Food

Just as the body needs food,
the soul needs divine nourishment.

Without Communion:

  • The soul weakens
  • Faith dries
  • Love fades

With Communion:

  • The soul is strengthened
  • Grace increases
  • Christ lives in us

🔸 4.5. Communion as Sacrifice Made Present

This sacrament is inseparable from the Cross.

Every time we receive Communion:

  • We participate in Calvary
  • We receive the fruit of the sacrifice

5. Doctrinal Clarity, Teachings of Church Fathers, Councils

🔶 5.1. The Sacrament of Communion in the Divine Plan

The Sacrament of Communion is not an isolated ritual.
It is the centrepiece of God’s entire plan of salvation.

From the beginning, God desired not just to save humanity,
but to unite humanity with Himself.

👉 In the Old Testament:

  • Manna in the desert (Exodus 16)
  • Bread of Presence in the Temple

These were not the reality—
they were preparations.

They were shadows pointing toward
👉 the true heavenly food—Communion.

🔶 5.2. Christ Establishes the Sacrament – Not a Symbol, but a Reality

At the Last Supper, Jesus does something unprecedented.

He does not say:
👉 “Think about me”
👉 “Remember me symbolically”

He says:

“This is my body… This is my blood.”

This is the moment where:

  • Sign becomes reality
  • Bread becomes presence
  • Memory becomes mystery

🔶 5.3. Doctrinal Clarity – What the Church Teaches

The Church teaches clearly:

👉 Transubstantiation

  • The substance changes
  • The appearance remains

This is not philosophy for argument—
this is theology for faith.

📜 Council Teaching

The Council of Trent declared:

👉 Christ is present

  • Truly
  • Really
  • Substantially

Not symbolically. Not spiritually alone.
But fully present.

🔶 5.4. Witness of the Early Church (Church Fathers)

This is not a later invention.
From the beginning, the Church believed this.

📜 Ignatius of Antioch (1st century)

He called the Eucharist:

👉 “The flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ.”

📜 Justin Martyr (2nd century)

He wrote:

👉 “This is not ordinary bread…
but Jesus Christ Himself.”

📜 Augustine of Hippo

He said:

👉 “Behold what you are, become what you receive.”

👉 What does this show?

From the earliest centuries,
the Church did not believe in symbolism—
but in real presence and real communion.

🔶 5.5. Communion as Sacrifice – The Living Calvary

The Sacrament of Communion cannot be separated from the Cross.

This is crucial.

👉 The same Christ who died on Calvary
is present in this sacrament.

Not another sacrifice.
Not a repetition.
But the same eternal sacrifice made present.

🔍 Illustration

Imagine standing at Calvary:

  • The Cross before you
  • The Blood being shed
  • Christ offering Himself

Now understand this:

👉 In every Communion,
you are spiritually standing at Calvary.

🔶 5.6. Communion as Union – The Meaning of “Communion”

The word itself reveals the theology.

👉 Communion = Union

Three dimensions:

  1. Union with Christ
  2. Union with the Church
  3. Union with humanity

Just as:

  • Food becomes part of your body

In Communion:
👉 You do not change Christ
👉 Christ changes you

🔶 5.7. Communion as Transformation

This sacrament is not passive.

It transforms:

  • Sin → Grace
  • Weakness → Strength
  • Division → Unity

📜 Teaching Echo

The Fathers insisted:

👉 Communion is not just to be received
👉 It is to be lived

🔶 5.8. Communion as the Fulfilment of All Sacraments

Now we come to the central point:

Among the seven sacraments:

  • Baptism prepares
  • Confirmation strengthens
  • Confession purifies

👉 But Communion fulfills

Why?

Because:

👉 Other sacraments give grace
👉 Communion gives the Author of grace

🔶 5.9. Communion and Worthiness (Serious Doctrine)

Saint Paul warns:

“Whoever eats and drinks unworthily…”

This is not fear—it is truth.

Communion demands:

  • Faith
  • Preparation
  • Conversion

If electricity is powerful,
it gives light—but mishandled, it destroys.

👉 Communion is divine power.
Handled with reverence → life
Handled carelessly → spiritual harm

🔶 5.10. Communion as Foretaste of Heaven

This sacrament is not only about earth.

It is a preview of eternity.

Every time we receive Communion:

👉 We participate in the heavenly banquet

It is like tasting a drop of the ocean
before entering the sea.

🔶 5.11. Final Theological Synthesis

The Sacrament of Communion is:

  • The presence of Christ
  • The continuation of Calvary
  • The unity of the Church
  • The transformation of the soul
  • The foretaste of heaven

It is not one sacrament among many.
It is:

👉 The heart of all sacraments
👉 The summit of Christian life

📘 6. Teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on the Sacrament of Communion

Our faith is not based only on personal experience or feeling.
It is rooted in the authoritative teaching of the Church.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives us a clear, profound, and precise understanding of the Sacrament of Communion.

🔹 6.1. The Source and Summit (CCC 1324)

The Catechism declares:

👉 The Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life.”

What does this mean?

  • Source → All grace flows from it
  • Summit → Everything leads toward it

👉 Every sacrament begins in Christ…
but finds its fulfilment in Communion.

🔹 6.2. Real Presence (CCC 1374)

The Catechism teaches:

👉 Christ is present:

  • Truly
  • Really
  • Substantially

Not symbolically. Not partially.

👉 The whole Christ is present:

  • Body
  • Blood
  • Soul
  • Divinity

This is the heart of our faith.

🔹 6.3. Sacrifice Made Present (CCC 1367)

The Catechism explains:

👉 The sacrifice of Christ and the Eucharist are one single sacrifice.

Not repeated—but made present.

👉 Calvary is not past.
It becomes present in every Mass.

🔹 6.4. Communion as Union (CCC 1391–1396)

The Catechism teaches that Communion:

  • Unites us with Christ
  • Strengthens charity
  • Wipes away venial sins
  • Preserves us from future sin
  • Builds the unity of the Church

👉 Communion is not only reception—
it is transformation and protection.

🔹 6.5. Worthy Reception (CCC 1385)

The Catechism clearly warns:

👉 Anyone conscious of grave sin must receive confession before Communion.

This is not a restriction—
this is reverence for the sacred.

🔥 The Catechism tells us clearly:

👉 Communion is not an optional devotion
👉 It is essential for life

👉 Not symbol
👉 But living Christ

👉 Not ritual
👉 But salvation made present

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju – Original Insights

“In the Sacrament of Communion, God does not remain distant—He becomes touchable, receivable, and intimately present.”

“The altar is not a symbol of memory; it is the meeting point of eternity and human history.”

“When we receive Communion, we are not remembering Christ— we are encountering the living Christ who remembers us.”

🕊️ Saint’s Voice

Francis of Assisi:

“O sublime humility! O humble sublimity! That the Lord of the universe… humbles Himself to come under the form of bread.”

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju – Poetic Reflection

Hidden glory, silent grace,
God now dwells in time and space.
Heaven rests within my hand,
Love, I scarcely understand.

🧠 7. Spiritual Diagnosis

Let us be honest:

  • Do we see Communion as routine?
  • Do we rush to receive without preparation?
  • Do we understand what we are receiving?

Many receive Communion…
but few encounter Christ.

⚔️ 8. Present Crisis

Today, the sacrament of Communion is:

  • Received without awareness
  • Taken casually
  • Sometimes even without faith

This is dangerous.

Because:

“Whoever eats and drinks unworthily…” (1 Cor 11)

🌍 9. Pastoral Reflection

The Church is alive because of this sacrament.

Remove Communion:

  • The Church becomes an organisation
  • Worship becomes empty
  • Faith becomes theory

Communion is what makes the Church:
👉 Living, breathing, divine

If the Sacrament of Communion is so great,
then one question arises:

👉 Are we preparing our people properly to receive it?

👶 9.1. Preparation of Children (First Communion Formation)

Children are not just taught rituals—
they must be led into mystery and encounter.

Preparation must include:

9.1.2 Faith Formation

  • Teaching that this is Jesus Himself
  • Not bread, not symbol

9.1.2. Reverence Formation

  • How to receive
  • How to kneel / stand
  • How to respond “Amen” with awareness

9.1.3. Spiritual Preparation

  • Basic understanding of sin
  • Importance of purity of heart

9.1.4. Experiential Preparation

  • Silence before the altar
  • Time for prayer
  • Awareness of sacredness

👉 If children are prepared well,
they will grow into Eucharistic Christians.

👨‍👩‍👧 9.2. Preparation of the Faithful (Adults and Families)

Preparation should not end after First Communion.

Many adults:

  • Receive regularly
  • But prepare poorly

🔹 9.2.1. Interior Preparation

Before receiving Communion:

  • Silence
  • Prayer
  • Examination of conscience

🔹 9.2.2. Sacramental Preparation

👉 Regular confession

Without reconciliation, Communion becomes routine.

🔹 9.2.3. Liturgical Awareness

  • Participating fully in the Mass
  • Listening to the Word
  • Offering oneself with Christ

🔹 9.2.4. Post-Communion Thanksgiving

Many receive and immediately leave.

But:

👉 The most powerful moment
is after receiving.

Remain. Pray. Speak to Christ.

⚠️ Pastoral Concern

Today we see:

  • Children receiving without understanding
  • Adults receiving without preparation
  • Faith becoming a habit instead of an encounter

This must change.

🔥 Pastoral Call

Let us build:

👉 Families that prepare for Communion
👉 Parishes that teach reverence
👉 Children who grow with Eucharistic faith

If we prepare well:

👉 Communion will not remain a ritual
👉 It will become a life-changing encounter

Now that we understand:

  • What the Church teaches
  • How we must prepare

👉 Let us examine our own hearts…

🛠️ 10. Practical Application

  1. Prepare before receiving (silence, prayer)
  2. Go for Confession regularly
  3. Receive with reverence and faith
  4. Spend time in thanksgiving after Communion
  5. Let your life reflect what you receive

🔍 11. Self-Examination

Ask:

  • Do I truly believe Jesus is present?
  • Do I long for Communion?
  • Do I receive worthily?

📣 12. Call of the Hour

Christ is asking today:

👉 “Will you receive me as a habit…
or as your life?”

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju – Original Insights

“Communion is not complete at the altar; it must continue in the life of the one who receives.”

“The true measure of receiving Christ is not how often we receive Him, but how deeply we reflect Him.”

“If Christ truly enters into us, then our words, actions, and relationships must become visible signs of His presence.”

🕊️ Saint’s Voice

Mother Teresa:

“When you look at the crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you. When you look at the Eucharist, you understand how much Jesus loves you now.”

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju – Poetic Reflection

I received the Bread of Life,
Yet returned to daily strife.
If Christ now lives and walks in me,
My life must speak His mystery.

🏁 13. Conclusion

Among the seven sacraments,
Communion stands as the heart.

It is:

  • Not just a sacrament
  • But the sacrament of sacraments

It is:

  • The presence we receive
  • The love we encounter
  • The life we live

If we understand Communion,
we understand Christianity.

If we live in Communion,
we live in Christ.

🙏 14. Prayer

Lord Jesus,
You have given us the greatest gift—
Your very self in the Sacrament of Communion.

Open our eyes to recognise You,
prepare our hearts to receive You,
and transform our lives through You.

Make us one with You
and one with each other.

Lead us to eternal communion in heaven.

Amen.
