✝️ THE EMPTY TOMB – “WHERE IS THE BODY?”
Theme: Absence That Reveals Presence
Core Message: God’s greatest work happens where we see nothing
🌅 1. INTRODUCTION – THE QUESTION THAT SHOOK HISTORY
Beloved
brothers and sisters,
On that
first Easter morning, a question echoed through the silence of the tomb:
👉 “Where
is the body?”
This is not
just a historical question.
This is a spiritual question.
This is a personal question.
🔹 John 20:1–9
👉 “They
did not find the body… He saw and believed.”
- Faith born from absence
- “He saw and believed” (without seeing
Jesus)
Because
even today:
- We come to places where we expected God… and find emptiness
- We come with hope… and meet silence
- We come with faith… and see nothing
And so we
ask:
👉 “Lord… where are You?”
🔥 Hans Urs von Balthasar
“God’s
silence is not His absence—it is His deeper presence.”
📖 2. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION – THE EMPTY TOMB
Let us
stand on the Word of God.
📜 John 20:1–7
“Mary
Magdalene came to the tomb early… and saw that the stone had been taken away…
they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”
📜 Luke 24:5
“Why do you
seek the living among the dead? He is not here… He is risen.”
📜 Matthew 28:2
“An angel
of the Lord descended… and rolled back the stone.”
🔍 3. THE GREAT MYSTERY – AN EMPTY SPACE
Notice
carefully:
- The tomb is real
- The stone is real
- The grave clothes are real
But the
body is missing.
👉
Christianity begins not with a presence… but with an absence
💥 The
greatest event in history is announced by what is NOT there
· “The body is missing…
because life has begun.”
· “Do not search for the
living among the dead.”
· “The greatest mystery is
not what is there—but what is gone.”
· “He is not there… because
He is everywhere.”
🪨 4. THE STONE – NOT REMOVED FOR JESUS
🔹 Matthew 28:2
👉 “The
angel… rolled back the stone.”
- God removes what we cannot
Let us
enter deeper.
Many think:
👉 “The stone was rolled away so Jesus could come out.”
No.
❗ The Risen Christ does not
need the stone removed.
He will later enter through locked doors (John 20:19).
👉 Then why
was the stone removed?
💥 Not to
let Jesus out… but to let YOU in.
🔥 SPIRITUAL INSIGHT
God removes
obstacles not for Himself—but for your revelation
- The stone is rolled away so you can see
- The tomb is opened so you can believe
👉 The
miracle is not the open tomb
👉 The miracle is the opened heart
🔥 St. John Chrysostom
“The stone
was removed not for Christ’s escape, but for the disciples’ faith.”
🎭 ILLUSTRATION – THE CLOSED ROOM
A child
once sat in a dark room, crying:
👉 “Mama, I cannot see you!”
The mother
replied:
👉 “But I can see you.”
💥 The
child’s darkness did not remove the mother’s presence
🔥 “Just because you cannot see God… does not mean God cannot see you.”
THE ROLLED STONE
The Open
Door
The stone was moved, not for escape,
But to reveal a heavenly shape.
Not to free the Risen One—
But show the victory already won.
Enter and
See
Come inside, do not delay,
The grave has nothing more to say.
For life has risen, death undone,
The battle finished, victory won.
· “The stone was not moved
for Him—but for you.”
· “The tomb is open—enter and
believe.”
· “God removes barriers… so
you can see His glory.”
· “The open tomb is an
invitation, not just a miracle.”
🌑 5. ABSENCE THAT REVEALS PRESENCE
🔹 John 16:7
👉 “It is
to your advantage that I go away.”
- Absence brings a greater presence
🔹 2 Corinthians 5:7
👉 “We
walk by faith, not by sight.”
- Believing without seeing
🔹 Hebrews 11:1
👉 “Faith
is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
- The theology of unseen reality
Here is the
paradox:
- Nobody… yet full of life
- No Jesus seen… yet Jesus is everywhere
💥 The
absence is not emptiness—it is transformation
✨ THEOLOGICAL DEPTH
In
theology, this is called “divine hiddenness”
God often
reveals Himself through:
- Silence
- Absence
- Emptiness
👉 Because if
He remains in the tomb, He is limited
👉 But by leaving the tomb, He becomes universal
💥 The
absence of His body reveals the presence of His glory
🔥 St. Gregory of Nyssa
“The one
who is sought is found not in presence, but in absence.”
🎭 ILLUSTRATION – THE SEED
A seed is
buried in the soil.
- You see nothing
- You hear nothing
👉 But
inside… life is exploding
💥 The
absence on the surface hides the miracle underneath
THE EMPTY SPACE
The Silent
Tomb Speaks
The tomb was quiet, nothing inside,
No voice, no body, nowhere to hide.
Yet in that silence, heaven proclaimed,
Death has fallen, Christ has reigned.
The Hidden
Victory
No trumpet sounded, no crowd could see,
Yet chains were broken silently.
Where eyes saw loss and empty ground,
Eternal victory was already found.
· “The tomb is empty… but God
is not absent.”
· “Where you see nothing… God
is doing everything.”
· “Absence is not
emptiness—it is divine action.”
· “God hides… not to leave
you, but to deepen you.”
🌍 6. GOD WORKS WHERE WE SEE NOTHING
📖 BIBLICAL PATTERNS
🌊 Creation 🔹 Genesis 1:2–3
“The earth
was without form and void…”
👉 Out of
emptiness… God created everything
🔹 Isaiah 45:15
👉 “Truly,
You are a God who hides Himself.”
- Hidden God, active God
🔹 John 5:17
👉 “My
Father is working until now.”
- God is always working—even when unseen
This is
your central message.
👉 God’s
greatest work happens where we see nothing
🌑 Abraham (Genesis 22)
- No future
- No hope
👉 But God
was working
✝️ Calvary
- Darkness
- Silence
- Death
👉 But
redemption was happening
🪦 The Tomb
- Closed
- Silent
- Empty
👉 But
resurrection had already occurred
💥 God does
His deepest work in invisible places
🔥 St. Thérèse of Lisieux
“Jesus does
not call us to see—but to trust.”
🎭 STORY
A man
prayed for years:
👉 “Lord, change my life!”
Nothing
happened.
Years
later, he realized:
- His patience grew
- His humility deepened
- His faith strengthened
💥 God was
working… silently
🔥 “God is doing His greatest work in places you
have already given up.”
😭 7. HUMAN EXPERIENCE – OUR EMPTY TOMBS
We all have
empty tomb moments:
- A prayer unanswered
- A relationship broken
- A ministry that seems fruitless
- A calling misunderstood
- A life that feels abandoned
And we ask:
👉 “Lord… where is the body?”
👉 “Where are You?”
🔹 Psalm 22:1
👉 “My
God, why have You forsaken me?”
- Feeling God’s absence
🔹 Lamentations 3:8
👉 “Though
I cry… He shuts out my prayer.”
- Silence of God
🔹 Job 23:8–9
👉 “I go
forward… but He is not there.”
- Searching and not finding
🎭 ILLUSTRATION – HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM
A family
sits outside ICU.
- No answers
- No movement
- Only waiting
👉 That room
is an “empty tomb”
💥 But God is
working beyond what they see
🔥 St. Edith Stein
“The deeper
the darkness, the nearer God is.”
🔥 8. THE DIVINE ANSWER
He answers:
👉 “Why do
you seek the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5)
💥 You are
looking in the wrong place
- You are searching for yesterday’s God
- But He is already ahead of you
🚶♂️ 9. THE JOURNEY OF FAITH – FROM SEEING TO BELIEVING
John 20:8
says:
“He saw and
believed.”
👉 He did not
see Jesus
👉 He saw the absence
💥 Faith
begins when evidence ends
✨ DEEP INSIGHT
- Sight says: “Nothing is here”
- Faith says: “Everything has changed”
🔥 St. Anselm of Canterbury
“Faith
seeks understanding—not the other way around.”
🎭 “John saw… nothing…
👉 And believed… everything…”
- “Faith
begins where sight ends.”
- “You
don’t need to see Him to believe—just trust the empty tomb.”
- “What
you cannot see may be God’s greatest work.”
- “The
unseen is often the most powerful reality.”
👗 10. THE GRAVE CLOTHES – SIGNS OF TRANSFORMATION
🔹 John 20:6–7
👉 “The
linen cloths lying there… the face cloth folded.”
- Order, not theft → Resurrection is
intentional
The linen
cloths were left behind.
👉 Why?
Because
resurrection does not take old things forward
💥 What was
wrapped in death is left behind in life
🔥 APPLICATION
- Old habits must be left
- Old sins must be left
- Old identity must be left
👉 You cannot
walk in resurrection wearing burial clothes
🎭 ILLUSTRATION – PRISONER RELEASED
A prisoner
is set free.
But
imagine:
👉 He still wears chains
💥 Freedom is
useless if you refuse to remove what binds you
🔥 “Some of us are resurrected… but still wrapped
in old life.”
· “Do not carry yesterday
into resurrection.”
· “You cannot rise… and
remain wrapped.”
· “Leave the grave
clothes—step into new life.”
· “Resurrection demands a new
identity.”
🕯️ 11. THE SILENCE OF GOD
The tomb
was silent.
No voice.
No movement.
No explanation.
👉 But God
was not inactive
💥 Silence is
not absence—it is preparation
📖 Psalm 46:10
“Be still…
and know that I am God.”
🔥 St. John of the Cross
“In the
dark night, God is doing His brightest work.”
🎭 ILLUSTRATION – THE ARTIST
An artist
disappears for months.
No
painting. No display.
Then
suddenly:
👉 A masterpiece is revealed
💥 Silence
was preparation
- “When
God is silent… He is not absent.”
- “He
works deepest in the quietest moments.”
- “Silence
is the workshop of resurrection.”
- “God’s
hidden work produces visible miracles.”
🌿 12. MARY MAGDALENE – FROM SEARCHING TO ENCOUNTER
She came
looking for a dead body.
She found:
👉 An empty tomb
👉 A living Lord
💥 LESSON
You may
come searching for answers
But God gives you Himself
🔥 St. Romanos the Melodist
“She sought
a corpse… and found the Creator.”
🎭 “You came looking for answers…
👉 But Jesus came to give you Himself.”
🔥 13. THE RESURRECTION POWER
The empty
tomb is not a conclusion—it is a beginning
📖 Romans 6:4
“We were
buried with Him… so that we too might walk in newness of life.”
- Our resurrection
🔹 1 Corinthians 15:55
👉 “O
death, where is your sting?”
- Victory over death
🔹 Colossians 3:1
👉 “Seek
the things that are above… where Christ is.”
- He is not in the tomb—He is risen
💥
Resurrection is not just about Jesus
💥 It is about YOU rising
🔥 St. Irenaeus of Lyons
“The glory
of God is man fully alive.”
🎭 APPLICATION
👉
“Resurrection is not about escaping death…
👉 It is about entering life.”
· “The empty tomb is not
silence—it is a shout of victory.”
· “Death lost… without making
a sound.”
· “The grave is empty because
hope is alive.”
· “Resurrection begins where
everything seems finished.”
🌍 14. GLOBAL ILLUSTRATION
There are
places in the world:
- Where churches are empty
- Where faith seems dying
Yet
suddenly:
👉 Revival begins
Because:
💥 God was working in the unseen
🧠 15. THEOLOGICAL DEPTH – THE COSMIC MEANING
The empty
tomb is:
- Victory over death
- Defeat of sin
- Beginning of new creation
📖 1 Corinthians 15:55
“O death,
where is your sting?”
💥 The tomb
is empty because death is defeated
❤️ 16. PERSONAL CALL – ENTER THE TOMB
The stone
is rolled away…
👉 Not for
Jesus
👉 But for YOU
🔥 INVITATION
Enter the
tomb of your life:
- Enter your pain
- Enter your doubt
- Enter your emptiness
And
discover:
💥 God is already there
· “Your empty place is God’s
working place.”
· “Enter your tomb—you will
find Him there.”
· “What feels like loss may
be divine preparation.”
· “The place you gave up on…
God has not.”
🧎♂️ 17. SELF-EXAMINATION
Ask
yourself:
- Where do I see nothing?
- Where do I feel God is absent?
- Where have I lost hope?
👉 That is
where God is working
RESURRECTION DAWN
The Morning
Light
The darkest night could not remain,
When Christ arose and broke the chain.
The dawn declared what none had known,
The grave is empty—He is enthroned.
The Living
Hope
Do not search among the dead,
For life has risen, just as He said.
The empty tomb now speaks to you,
“I make all things alive and new.”
🌅 18. CONCLUSION – THE FINAL DECLARATION
Beloved,
The world
asks:
👉 “Where is the body?”
Heaven
answers:
👉 “He is not here—He is risen!”
💥 FINAL POWER STATEMENTS
- The tomb is empty—but your life must not
remain empty
- The stone is moved—but your heart must
also move
- The body is gone—but the presence has
filled the world
🔥 THE FINAL INVITATION
Do not
stand outside asking questions
👉 Enter the
mystery
👉 Encounter the risen Christ
🔥 The tomb is empty…
- The stone is rolled away…
- The body is not there…
👉 “And that…
is the greatest news…”
· “The tomb is empty—now let
your heart be full.”
· “The stone is rolled
away—now let your faith rise.”
· “He is not there—so that He
can be with you everywhere.”
· “The empty tomb is not the
end—it is the beginning of everything.”
🌅 FINAL DECLARATION
💥 “God is
most present… where He seems most absent.”
💥 “The place
you thought was the end… is where God has already begun.”
19. 🙏 PRAYER
Lord Jesus
Christ,
You who left the tomb empty,
enter the empty places of our hearts.
Where we
see nothing,
teach us to trust Your hidden work.
Where we
feel abandoned,
reveal Your living presence.
Roll away
every stone of fear, doubt, and despair.
Remove every grave cloth that binds us.
Lead us
into the fullness of resurrection life,
that we may not seek You among the dead,
but live as witnesses of the Living Lord.
Amen.
