Homily: 🔥 3rd SUNDAY OF EASTER – YEAR A - 🌅 “From Broken Hope to Burning Hearts” - Scripture Readings: 1st Reading: Acts 2:14, 22-33, Psalm 16, 2nd Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-21, Gospel Luke 24:13-35.

🔥 THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER – YEAR A

🌅 “From Broken Hope to Burning Hearts”

(A Journey from Confusion to Communion)

Scripture Readings: 1st Reading: Acts 2:14, 22-33, Psalm 16, 2nd Reading:       1 Peter 1:17-21, Gospel Luke 24:13-35.

🌄 1. Introduction

Beloved brothers and sisters,

There are moments in life when everything seems shattered.
Dreams collapse… hopes fade… faith becomes weak.

That is exactly where today’s readings begin.

Not in victory…
But in confusion.
Not in clarity…
But in brokenness.

Yet, from that brokenness, God creates the greatest transformation:

👉 From fear → Faith
👉 From confusion → Clarity
👉 From death → Resurrection Life

Today is not just about the Resurrection.
It is about recognizing the Risen Christ in our daily life.

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju’s Insights

“God often begins His greatest works not in our strength, but in our brokenness.”

“The road of confusion can become the road of revelation when Christ walks with us.”

“Faith is not the absence of struggle, but the presence of Christ in the struggle.”

🕊️ Saints Voice

Saint Augustine
👉 “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

🎼 Dr. Addanki Raju’s Poetic Reflection

🌄 “The Road Where Grace Begins”

When hope seems lost and paths grow dim,
A silent step draws near with Him;
In broken roads, His light we see,
And lost hearts find their destiny.

EXPLANATION OF SCRIPTURE READINGS

🍞 2. FIRST READING – ACTS 2:14, 22–33

🔥 “THE RESURRECTION: GOD’S FINAL WORD”

🔥 2. 1. From Fear to Fearless Witness

(Acts 2:14)

Beloved brothers and sisters,

The First Reading opens with a powerful scene:

👉 “Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them” (Acts 2:14).

This is the same Peter who denied Jesus three times (Luke 22:57–60).
The same Peter who was afraid of a servant girl (Luke 22:56).

But now—he stands before a crowd.

What has changed?

👉 The Resurrection (Acts 2:32)
👉 The Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4)

This shows us:

When a person truly encounters the Risen Christ,
fear is transformed into courage.

🧠 2. 2. Jesus: A Real Historical Savior

(Acts 2:22)

Peter begins:

👉 “Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs” (Acts 2:22).

Faith is not imagination.
Faith is rooted in history.

Jesus lived.
Jesus acted.
Jesus was seen.

As Saint John later writes:

👉 “What we have seen with our eyes… and touched with our hands” (1 John 1:1).

Christianity is not a myth—it is a living reality.

🩸 2. 3. The Mystery of Sin and God’s Plan

(Acts 2:23)

Peter continues:

👉 “This Jesus… you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men” (Acts 2:23).

Here we see two truths together:

  • Human sin rejected Christ
  • God’s plan allowed it for salvation

Because Peter also says:

👉 “According to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23).

Even sin could not destroy God’s plan.
God can bring salvation even out of human failure.

🌅 2. 4. The Resurrection: Victory Over Death

(Acts 2:24)

Then comes the heart of the message:

👉 “But God raised Him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it” (Acts 2:24).

This is the center of our faith.

As Saint Paul says:

👉 “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile” (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Why was it impossible for death to hold Him?

Because:

👉 Jesus is the Author of life (Acts 3:15).
👉 Jesus is without sin (Hebrews 4:15).

Death has power over sinners—
but not over the Sinless One.

📖 2. 5. Fulfillment of Scripture

(Acts 2:25–28)

Peter quotes:

👉 “You will not abandon my soul to Hades… nor let your Holy One see corruption” (Acts 2:27; cf. Psalm 16:10).

He explains:

👉 David died and was buried (Acts 2:29).
👉 So this cannot refer to David.

It refers to Christ.

This means:

👉 The Resurrection was not an accident
👉 It was foretold in Scripture

God’s Word never fails.

👑 2. 6. The Exalted Lord

(Acts 2:32–33)

Peter concludes:

👉 “This Jesus God raised up… being therefore exalted at the right hand of God” (Acts 2:32–33).

Jesus is not only risen—
He is Lord.

As Saint Paul declares:

👉 “God has highly exalted Him” (Philippians 2:9).

🎯 Spiritual Application

Beloved brothers and sisters,

  • Are we still living in fear like Peter before the Resurrection?
  • Or are we witnessing boldly like Peter after encountering Christ?

The same Risen Lord is present today.
The same Spirit is given to us.

Let us move from fear… to faith… to fearless witness.

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju’s Insights

“The Resurrection does not remove fear—it transforms fearful people into fearless witnesses.”

“When the Holy Spirit fills the heart, silence is no longer possible—truth must be proclaimed.”

“God’s greatest victory is not avoiding the Cross but conquering it through Resurrection.”

🕊️ Saints Voice

Saint John Chrysostom
👉 “The apostles became bold not by their own strength, but by the power of the Spirit.”

🎼 Dr. Addanki Raju’s Poetic Reflection

🔥 “From Ashes to Fire”

A trembling voice once filled with fear,
Now speaks with power loud and clear;
The Spirit turns the weak to flame,
To rise and boldly speak His name.

🎶 3. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 16

🎵 THE SONG OF TRUST

🎼 “You Will Not Abandon My Soul”

🌿 Spiritual Reflection

This Psalm is a song of deep trust.

David declares:

👉 “You will not abandon me”
👉 “You show me the path of life”

Hidden Mystery

This Psalm is prophetic.

Peter himself uses it in the First Reading to prove:

👉 It is not about David
👉 It is about Christ’s Resurrection

💥 Theology

This Psalm reveals:

  • God is faithful beyond death
  • Relationship with God is stronger than the grave

👉 Resurrection is already hidden in the Old Testament

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju’s Insights

“True security is not found in what we possess, but in whom we trust.”

“When God becomes our portion, even loss cannot steal our joy.”

“Hope in God does not deny suffering—it transcends it.”

🕊️ Saints Voice

Saint Teresa of Avila
👉 “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you; God alone suffices.”

🎼 Dr. Addanki Raju’s Poetic Reflection

🌿 “The Portion That Never Fades”

Gold may glitter, wealth may fall,
But God alone is all in all;
In Him my heart finds rest so true,
A joy no sorrow can undo.

🩸 4. SECOND READING – 1 PETER 1:17–21

🔥 “THE COST OF YOUR SALVATION

💥

Peter now speaks not about what happened to Jesus,
but about what it means for YOU.

🩸 “The Precious Blood That Redeemed Us”

🙏 4. 1. A Call to Holy Living

(1 Peter 1:17)

Saint Peter begins:

👉 “Conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile” (1 Peter 1:17).

This “fear” is not terror—
it is reverence.

We are pilgrims in this world (Hebrews 13:14).
Our life must reflect our heavenly calling.

💰 4. 2. Not Redeemed by Perishable Things

(1 Peter 1:18)

👉 “You were ransomed… not with perishable things such as silver or gold” (1 Peter 1:18).

Everything in this world:

  • money
  • success
  • status

👉 is temporary.

None of these can save us.

🩸 4. 3. The Precious Blood of Christ

(1 Peter 1:19)

👉 “But with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish” (1 Peter 1:19).

This connects to:

👉 The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12:5–7)
👉 The Lamb of God (John 1:29)

Our salvation is costly.

As Saint Paul says:

👉 “You were bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20).

🌍 4. 4. God’s Eternal Plan

(1 Peter 1:20)

👉 “He was foreknown before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:20).

Before creation…
before our existence…

👉 God already planned our salvation.

This reveals God’s immense love.

As Jeremiah says:

👉 “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).

✝️ 4. 5. Faith and Hope in God

(1 Peter 1:21)

👉 “Through Him you are believers in God… so that your faith and hope are in God” (1 Peter 1:21).

Faith is not in things.
Hope is not in circumstances.

👉 Faith and hope are in God alone.

🎯 Spiritual Application

Beloved brothers and sisters,

  • Do we realize the price of our redemption?
  • Do we live as people bought by Christ’s blood?
  • Is our hope truly in God?

Let us not live cheaply—
because we were purchased at a great cost.

🔥

  • Acts → Proclaims the Resurrection (Acts 2:24)
  • Psalm → Hopes in the Resurrection (Psalm 16:10)
  • Peter → Explains the meaning of the Resurrection (1 Peter 1:19–21)
  • Gospel → Experiences the Risen Christ (Luke 24:31)

👉 One message:
The Risen Christ transforms history, redeems humanity, and walks with us today.

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju’s Insights

“Your value is not measured by the world, but by the price Christ paid for you.”

“The Cross is not a sign of defeat, but the measure of divine love.”

“A life redeemed by blood cannot be lived cheaply—it must be lived holy.”

🕊️ Saints Voice

Saint Peter the Apostle
👉 “You were ransomed… with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18–19).

🎼 Dr. Addanki Raju’s Poetic Reflection

🩸 “The Price of Love”

Not gold nor silver paid my due,
But crimson love that flowed so true;
A life once lost is now restored,
By precious blood of Christ my Lord.

🚶‍♂️ 5. 🔥 THE GOSPEL – LUKE 24:13–35 (EMMAUS)

🔥 “FROM BLINDNESS TO BURNING HEART”

🍞 “HOW JESUS HEALS A BROKEN HEART AND OPENS BLIND EYES”

🌑 5. 1. THE HUMAN CONDITION – “WE HAD HOPED…”

(Luke 24:13–21)

Let us enter the Gospel slowly.

Two disciples are walking away from Jerusalem.

👉 Jerusalem = place of faith
👉 Jerusalem = place of community
👉 Jerusalem = place of God’s action

But now they are leaving it.

💔 What does this mean?

They are not just walking on a road…

👉 They are walking away from:

  • their faith
  • their community
  • their purpose
  • their hope

And then they say:

👉 “We had hoped…”

This is one of the most painful sentences in the Bible.

Because:

  • It is not suffering alone
  • It is disappointed faith

🎯 Make it touch the people:

There are people sitting in front of you who feel the same:

  • “I had hoped my prayer would be answered…”
  • “I had hoped my family problem would be solved…”
  • “I had hoped God would help me…”

👉 And now they are silently saying:
“We had hoped…”

💥 THIS IS THE STARTING POINT OF THE GOSPEL
Not faith… but broken faith

👣 5. 2. JESUS WALKS WITH THEM – BUT THEY DON’T RECOGNIZE HIM

(Luke 24:15–16)

The Gospel says:

👉 “Jesus himself came near and walked with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.”

🧠 Deep Spiritual Truth

👉 The problem is not that Jesus is absent
👉 The problem is that they cannot see

Why?

Because their hearts are filled with:

  • sadness
  • disappointment
  • confusion

👉 When the heart is heavy,
even God’s presence becomes invisible

🎯 Make it practical:

People say:

  • “God is not with me”
  • “God has left me”

But the truth is:

👉 God is walking with them
👉 But they are too wounded to see Him

💥 POWERFUL LINE:

👉 “Jesus is closer to you in your pain…
than you are to yourself—but you don’t recognize Him.”

🗣️ 5. 3. JESUS LISTENS BEFORE HE TEACHES

(Luke 24:17–24)

Jesus asks:

👉 “What are you discussing?”

He already knows everything.

But He lets them speak.

🧠 Deep Pastoral Theology

👉 God does not rush to preach
👉 He first listens to your pain

They pour out everything:

  • their confusion
  • their disappointment
  • their broken expectations

🎯 Application

Before healing…

👉 Jesus allows expression

💥 LINE:

👉 “A heart that is not expressed… cannot be healed.”

📖 5. 4. “HE EXPLAINED THE SCRIPTURES” – WHAT DID JESUS ACTUALLY EXPLAIN?

(Luke 24:25–27)

The Gospel says:

👉 “Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them what referred to Him in all the Scriptures.”

People may ask:

👉 “What exactly did Jesus explain?”

Let us open it for them simply and powerfully.

🔥 JESUS’ BIBLE CLASS ON THE ROAD

1️ FROM MOSES (LAW)

Jesus would have shown:

👉 Genesis 3:15

  • The promise that evil will be crushed

👉 The Passover Lamb (Exodus)

  • Blood saves people from death

💥 Meaning:
👉 “I am that Lamb. My blood saves you.”

2️ FROM THE PROPHETS

👉 Isaiah 53

  • The suffering servant
  • “He was wounded for our sins”

💥 Meaning:
👉 “My suffering was not failure… it was mission.”

3️ FROM THE PSALMS

👉 Psalms 16

  • “You will not abandon my soul to death”

💥 Meaning:
👉 “My Resurrection was already promised.”

💥  “Jesus opened the Bible and showed them:
My suffering was planned…
My death was meaningful…
My Resurrection was certain.”

🧠 DEEP THEOLOGY

👉 Without Scripture… suffering looks meaningless
👉 With Scripture… suffering becomes salvation

💥 “When you don’t understand God’s Word,
your life becomes confusion.
When you understand God’s Word,
even suffering becomes meaningful.”

🔥 5. 5. “WERE NOT OUR HEARTS BURNING?”

(Luke 24:32)

Notice this:

👉 They still did not recognize Him physically
👉 But something started happening inside

🔥 Their hearts began to burn

🧠 What is this “burning”?

  • Not emotion alone
  • Not excitement

👉 It is the Holy Spirit awakening faith

🎯 Application

When the Word of God is preached well:

👉 It should not just inform
👉 It should ignite

💥 LINE:

👉 “If your heart never burns…
you have heard words—but not encountered the Word.”

🍞 5. 6. THE CLIMAX – “IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD”

(Luke 24:30–31)

Now comes the highest point.

👉 They invite Him in
👉 He sits at table
👉 He takes bread
👉 He blesses
👉 He breaks
👉 He gives

And suddenly—

👉 Their eyes are opened

🧠 DEEP EUCHARISTIC THEOLOGY

Why here?

Why not earlier?

Because:

👉 Full recognition of Christ happens in the Eucharist

💥 They:

  • Walked with Him → didn’t recognize
  • Heard Him → didn’t recognize

👉 But when He broke the bread…
👉 They saw Him

💥 “You can listen to many sermons…
but you truly see Jesus in the Eucharist.”

🔥 What happened in Emmaus
👉 Happens in every Mass

  1. Liturgy of the Word → Scripture explained
  2. Liturgy of the Eucharist → Bread broken

👉 Same pattern
👉 Same Jesus
👉 Same encounter

5. 7. IMMEDIATE TRANSFORMATION

(Luke 24:33–35)

Once they recognize Him—

they do not remain the same.

👉 “That same hour they rose and returned to Jerusalem” (Luke 24:33).

From:

  • sadness → joy
  • confusion → clarity
  • escape → mission

They go back to the community they had left.

Because a real encounter with Christ
always leads to transformation.

After recognizing Him:

👉 They don’t rest
👉 They don’t delay

They run back to Jerusalem

🧠 Meaning

👉 Real encounter leads to mission

💥 “If you truly meet the Risen Christ,
you cannot remain the same,
you cannot remain silent,
you cannot remain where you were.”

🔥 “My dear brothers and sisters…
maybe today… you came with a heavy heart…”

👉 “Maybe you are also walking your Emmaus road…”

Then say:

👉 “But listen carefully…
Jesus is already walking with you…”

👉 “He is speaking to you now…”
👉 “He will break bread for you…”

👉 “Will you recognize Him?”

✍️ Dr. Addanki Raju’s Insights

“Jesus walks with us even when we walk away from Him.”

“The Word of God enlightens the mind, but the Eucharist opens the eyes.”

“A true encounter with Christ turns despair into mission.”

🕊️ Saints Voice

From Saint John Paul II
👉 “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life.”

🎼 Dr. Addanki Raju’s Poetic Reflection

🍞 “When Bread Becomes Vision”

They walked in doubt, their hearts unsure,
Till bread was broken, light made pure;
In that small act, their eyes could see,
The Risen Lord in mystery.

🔗 6. THE GRAND CONNECTION

👉 In Acts – Jesus is PROCLAIMED
👉 In Peter – Jesus is EXPLAINED
👉 In Luke – Jesus is EXPERIENCED

💥 “The same Jesus who was preached…
The same Jesus who redeemed…
Is the same Jesus who walks with you today!”

👉 “Maybe you came today tired…”
👉 “Maybe you came with broken hope…”
👉 “Maybe you are walking your own Emmaus road…”

👉 “But today… Jesus is walking with YOU.”

🧪 7. Spiritual Diagnosis

  • Are we like Peter before Pentecost? (Fearful?)
  • Are we like the Psalmist? (Trusting?)
  • Are we living redeemed lives?
  • Are we like Emmaus disciples? (Walking away?)

👉 The biggest danger:

Walking with Jesus… but not recognizing Him

Now:

  • Are we walking away like these disciples?
  • Are we saying, “I had hoped”?
  • Is our heart cold or burning?
  • Do we attend Mass… but not recognize Him?

🌍 8. Pastoral Reflection

Today’s world is full of:

  • Information… but no transformation
  • Religion… but no encounter
  • Activity… but no intimacy

Christ is asking:

👉 Not “Do you know me?”
👉 But “Do you recognize me?”

Where?

  • In Scripture
  • In Eucharist
  • In the poor
  • In daily life

🔥 9. Illustration

A man attended Mass daily.

But his life never changed.

One day he said:

“I go to church… but I feel nothing.”

The priest replied:

👉 “You attend… but do you encounter?”

That is the difference between:

  • Religion → Routine
  • Faith → Relationship

🎯 10. Weekly Action

  1. Spend time with Scripture daily
  2. Attend Holy Mass with awareness
  3. Look for Jesus in ordinary life
  4. Share your faith like Peter
  5. Live as redeemed people

🏁 11. Conclusion

Beloved brothers and sisters,

The journey to Emmaus is not just a story of the past—it is the story of our life today (Luke 24:13).

Many of us begin with faith, but somewhere along the way, we become tired, discouraged, and broken, and we begin to say, “We had hoped…” (Luke 24:21).

Yet, today’s Gospel gives us a powerful assurance:
Even when we walk away from God, He never walks away from us (Luke 24:15).

He comes near.
He walks with us.
He listens to us.
He explains our life through His Word (Luke 24:27).

And when we least expect it,
He reveals Himself in the breaking of the bread (Luke 24:30–31).

The same Jesus who walked with the disciples of Emmaus
is walking with us in our confusion, in our struggles, and in our doubts.

The same Jesus who opened their eyes
wants to open our eyes today.

The same Jesus who set their hearts on fire
wants to ignite our hearts again (Luke 24:32).

Let us not remain in our sadness.
Let us not remain in our disappointment.
Let us not continue walking away.

Instead, let us return to Him,
return to His Word,
return to the Eucharist,
return to the community of faith (Luke 24:33).

Because when we truly encounter the Risen Christ,
our life cannot remain the same.

Our sadness will turn into joy,
our confusion into clarity,
our fear into courage,
and our cold hearts into burning hearts.

Today, the Lord is speaking to us.
Today, the Lord is walking with us.
Today, the Lord is revealing Himself to us.

Let us recognize Him…
and let our hearts burn again.

Today’s message is powerful:

👉 Jesus is walking with you
👉 Even when you don’t recognize Him

👉 Your confusion is not the end
👉 It is the beginning of revelation

👉 Your brokenness is not failure
👉 It is the place of encounter

🔥 The question is not:
“Is Jesus present?”

🔥 The question is:
“Do I recognize Him?”

👉 “The road that began with sadness…
ended with mission.”

🙏 12. Prayer

Lord Jesus,
You walk with us even when we are lost.
You speak when we are confused.
You break bread when we are blind.

Open our eyes, Lord.
Set our hearts on fire.
Transform our lives.

May we recognize You
In Scripture…
In the Eucharist…
And in every moment of our life.

Amen.
