HOMILY: THE HOLY ROSARY - THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES - “3. THE CROWNING WITH THORNS.”
THE HOLY ROSARY
THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES
“3. THE CROWNING WITH THORNS”
1. INTRODUCTION: THE KING MOCKED BY HIS OWN CREATION
My dear
brothers and sisters,
Today we
stand before one of the most painful and humiliating scenes in the Passion of
Christ—the Crowning with Thorns.
This is not
merely a moment of suffering.
This is a revelation.
A
revelation of:
- The cruelty of sin
- The blindness of the human heart
- And the humility of God
The King of
Heaven…
Is crowned—not with gold… but with thorns.
The Creator
of the universe…
Is mocked by His own creatures.
The One who
deserves worship…
Is given ridicule.
👉 This
mystery is not only about what they did to Jesus.
👉 It is about what sin continues to do to Jesus today.
2. A KING IN MOCKERY
After the
scourging, the soldiers were not satisfied.
They wanted
entertainment.
They
gathered around Jesus and turned His suffering into a game.
- They twisted a crown of thorns and pressed it into His head
- They put a purple robe on Him
- They placed a reed in His hand
- They knelt before Him in mock worship
And they
shouted:
👉 “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Then:
- They struck Him
- They spat on Him
- They ridiculed Him
This is not
just violence.
This is humiliation.
3. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION
Matthew
27:29–30
“And
twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head… and kneeling
before Him, they mocked Him… and they spat on Him and took the reed and struck
Him on the head.”
John 19:2–3
“They
clothed Him in a purple robe… saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ and struck Him
with their hands.”
4. THEOLOGICAL DEPTH
According
to Fulton J. Sheen, this mystery reveals something profound:
👉 Sin
attacks the mind.
The crown
of thorns was placed on the head of Christ.
Why?
Because:
- Pride begins in the mind
- Sin is conceived in thoughts
- Rebellion starts in the intellect
The thorns
represent:
- Evil thoughts
- Pride
- Jealousy
- Lust
- Hatred
👉 Every
sinful thought becomes a thorn in the head of Christ.
5. THE SPIRITUAL DIAGNOSIS
My dear
brothers and sisters,
Let us not
look only at the soldiers.
Let us look
at ourselves.
👉 How many
times do we crown Jesus with thorns?
When we:
- Entertain impure thoughts
- Judge others harshly
- Hold on to pride
- Think evil instead of good
👉 We are
placing thorns on His head.
Ask
yourself:
- What fills my mind daily?
- Are my thoughts holy or harmful?
- Do I allow negativity to rule me?
6. THE MESSAGE OF TODAY’S MYSTERY
1. THE HUMILITY OF CHRIST
Jesus could have stopped everything.
But He did not.
He accepted:
• Mockery
• Shame
• Humiliation
Why?
👉 To teach us humility.
2. THE DANGER OF PRIDE
The opposite of Christ’s humility is pride.
Pride says:
• “I
am better”
• “I
don’t need God”
• “My
will matters most”
👉 Pride creates thorns.
3. THE BATTLE OF THE MIND
Your greatest battlefield is not outside.
👉 It is inside your mind.
• Thoughts
become words
• Words
become actions
• Actions
become habits
• Habits
shape your destiny
7. ILLUSTRATION
A holy man once said:
“Birds may fly over your head, but you cannot
stop that.
But you can stop them from building a nest on
your head.”
👉 Thoughts may come.
👉 But you choose whether they stay.
If you allow sinful thoughts to stay…
👉 You are weaving a crown of thorns.
8. GLOBAL APPLICATION: TODAY’S WORLD
Today’s world is full of:
• Distractions
• Impurity
• Pride
• Comparison
Social media feeds:
• Jealousy
• Anger
• Lust
• Anxiety
👉 The modern world is mass-producing thorns.
And many unknowingly place them on Christ.
9. THE CALL OF THE HOUR
👉 Guard your mind.
Because:
• A
pure mind leads to a holy life
• An
impure mind leads to destruction
St. John Paul II said:
“The future of humanity passes by way of the
human heart.”
10. SUGGESTIONS FOR ACTION
Take this
seriously:
1. DAILY MIND EXAMINATION
Before
sleeping, ask:
- What did I think today?
- Did my thoughts please God?
2. CONTROL YOUR INPUT
- Reduce harmful media
- Avoid sinful content
- Fill your mind with Scripture
3. PRAY THE ROSARY WITH INTENTION
Especially
this mystery.
Say:
👉 “Lord, purify my mind.”
4. PRACTICE HUMILITY
- Accept correction
- Avoid pride
- Serve silently
11. PASTORAL REFLECTION
The Church
today is like an operation theatre.
People
come:
- Wounded
- Broken
- Mentally disturbed
And what is
the treatment?
👉 The Word
of God
👉 The Sacraments
👉 The Rosary
The
Crowning with Thorns heals:
👉 The wounded mind.
Look at
Jesus.
Silent.
Bleeding.
Mocked.
He is not
angry.
He is not
resisting.
👉 He is
loving.
Even now,
He looks at you and says:
“My child…
Will you remove these thorns…
or add more?”
12. CONCLUSION: FROM THORNS TO GLORY
My dear
brothers and sisters,
The crown
of thorns is not the end.
👉 It leads
to the crown of glory.
But the
question is:
- Will you continue to wound Christ?
- Or will you comfort Him?
Today, make
a decision:
👉 Remove the
thorns of:
- Pride
- Impurity
- Hatred
- Negative thinking
And replace
them with:
- Love
- Purity
- Humility
- Faith
👉 Do not
leave this message here.
Carry it
home.
Live it.
Because
every thought matters.
Every
thought either:
👉 Wounds Christ
or
👉 Honours Him.
13. THE ECHO AND TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
👉 “Guard
your mind, because your thoughts crown Christ—either with thorns or with
glory.”
14. PRAYER
Lord Jesus,
Crowned with thorns for my sins,
I bow before You in sorrow and love.
Forgive me,
Lord,
for every sinful thought
that has wounded Your sacred head.
Purify my
mind,
cleanse my heart,
and renew my spirit.
Give me the
grace
to reject evil thoughts,
to resist temptation,
and to think what is holy and true.
Teach me
humility,
when pride rises within me.
Teach me
silence,
when anger fills my mind.
Teach me
purity,
when temptation surrounds me.
Lord,
remove every thorn
I have placed upon You.
And help
me, from this day forward,
to crown You not with pain,
but with love, obedience, and holiness.
I surrender
my mind to You.
I surrender my thoughts to You.
I surrender my life to You.
Amen.
