“2. The Scourging at the Pillar.”
Reveals The Cruelty of Sin
The Cost of Redemption in the Passion of Christ
1. Introduction: A Scene the World Cannot Ignore
My dear
brothers and sisters,
Today we
stand before one of the most shocking moments in human history—the Scourging
of Christ.
Not just an
event.
Not just suffering.
But a revelation.
A
revelation of:
- What sin truly is
- What sin does
- And what it costs to save us
Fulton J.
Sheen once said:
👉 “Before the scourging, sin looked pleasant; after the scourging, sin
revealed its cruelty.”
Today, we
must not just look at Jesus.
👉 We must understand what we are seeing.
2. The Biblical Foundation: The Silent Suffering Servant
Isaiah 53:5
“He was
wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; by His stripes we
are healed.”
John 19:1
“Then
Pilate took Jesus and had Him scourged.”
This is not
just punishment.
This is substitution.
👉 He suffers
what we deserve.
👉 He takes what belongs to us.
3. What Was the Scourging? (Historical Reality)
My dear
people,
The Roman
scourging was one of the most brutal punishments ever invented.
- Jesus was tied to a pillar
- His back exposed
- Whipped with a flagrum (lashes with metal and bone)
- Flesh torn
- Blood flowing
- Body disfigured
Many
prisoners died even before crucifixion.
👉 But Jesus
did not die there.
Because He still had more to suffer—for you.
4. Sin Made Visible
👉 On the
Cross, sin is paid for
👉 At the Scourging, sin is exposed
Sin
normally appears:
- Attractive
- Harmless
- Enjoyable
But in the
scourging:
👉 Sin
shows its true face—cruel, violent, destructive
Every lash
says:
- “This is what sin does.”
- “This is what sin causes.”
5. The Cruelty of Sin Revealed
Let us go
deeper.
1. Sin is not a mistake—it is violence against God
Every sin
is not just breaking a rule.
👉 It is striking Christ.
2. Sin destroys beauty
The most
beautiful among men becomes disfigured.
👉 Sin
disfigures the soul just as scourging disfigured Christ’s body.
3. Sin enslaves humanity
The
soldiers beat Him—but sin is the real executioner.
4. Sin numbs the human heart
The crowd
watched.
No one stopped it.
👉 Sin makes
us indifferent.
6. A Powerful Image for the World
Imagine
this:
If every
sin you committed left a visible wound on Christ’s body…
👉 How would Jesus look today?
My dear
brothers and sisters,
👉 The
scourging is the mirror of our soul.
7. The Cost of Redemption
Now we come
to the heart of the message.
👉 Salvation
is FREE for us
👉 But it was NOT CHEAP
It cost:
- Blood
- Flesh
- Pain
- Humiliation
- Love beyond measure
St. Peter
says:
1 Peter
1:18–19
“You were
redeemed… not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.”
8. Why Did Jesus Accept This?
Not because
He had to.
👉 Because He chose to.
Why?
1. Love
“I loved
you even when you wounded Me.”
2. Redemption
“To restore
what sin destroyed.”
3. Transformation
“To make
sinners into saints.”
9. Illustration: The Hidden Cost
A child
breaks a valuable vase.
The father says: “It’s okay.”
But later
the father quietly pays the full price to replace it.
👉
Forgiveness is free for the child…
👉 But costly for the father.
My dear
people,
👉 You are
the child
👉 God is the Father
👉 The price… is Jesus’ blood
10. Spiritual Diagnosis
Let us be
honest.
👉 We take
sin lightly
👉 We justify it
👉 We repeat it
But today…
👉 Look at
Jesus scourged
👉 And say: “This is not small.”
11. The Call of the Hour
Today
Christ asks:
👉 “Will you
still love sin… after seeing what it did to Me?”
👉 “Will you
continue what caused My wounds?”
👉 “Will you
walk away… or return to Me?”
Close our
eyes for a moment.
See Jesus:
- Bound
- Bleeding
- Silent
And hear
Him say:
👉 “I did
this for you.”
What will
you say back?
12. This Message for the Modern World
We live in
a world where:
- Sin is normalised
- Morality is blurred
- Conscience is silenced
But the
scourging speaks louder than culture:
👉 Sin is not
freedom
👉 Sin is not harmless
👉 Sin destroys
To every
person listening across the world:
👉 Do not
reduce Christianity to comfort
👉 Do not reduce faith to routine
👉 See the
scourged Christ
👉 And respond with your life
13. The Transformation Point
The
scourging is not only about pain.
👉 It is about conversion.
When we
truly understand this:
- We hate sin
- We love Christ
- We seek holiness
14. Practical Application
- Spend time before the crucifix daily
- Reflect on Christ’s suffering
- Go for Confession sincerely
- Avoid even small sins consciously
- Offer small sacrifices in love
15. Conclusion: From Cruelty to Conversion
My dear
brothers and sisters,
The
scourging is not just about pain.
👉 It is about truth.
It tells
us:
- Sin is deadly
- Love is costly
- Redemption is real
👉 Do not
leave this message unchanged.
16. The Echo and Take-Home Message
👉 “If sin
wounds Christ… I will no longer embrace it.”
👉 “If Christ suffered for me… I will live for Him.”
17. Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Scourged and wounded for our sins,
open our eyes to see the cruelty of sin
and the depth of Your love.
Give us the
grace to hate sin,
to turn back to You,
and to live a holy life.
Let Your
wounds heal our hearts,
Your blood cleanse our souls,
and Your love transform our lives.
We
surrender ourselves to You today.
Amen.
