🔥 PALM SUNDAY: THE KING WE WELCOME… AND THE KING WE CRUCIFY
“FROM HOSANNA TO
THE CROSS — THE JOURNEY OF TRUE DISCIPLESHIP”
(Isaiah
50:4–7; Psalm 22; Philippians 2:6–11; Matthew 26:14—27:66)
✨ 1. INTRODUCTION —
ENTERING THE MYSTERY
My dear brothers and sisters,
Today, we are not just listening…
👉 we are entering a journey.
A journey
that begins with joy…
👉 but ends on the Cross.
Today we
hold palms in our hands…
But soon we will hear the Passion.
And the
question is:
👉 Will we remain with Jesus… or abandon Him?
👉 This is
not just a message
👉 This is our story
🔥 “THE TWO PROCESSIONS”
My dear brothers and sisters,
On Palm Sunday, there are actually two processions:
👉 One procession enters Jerusalem with palms
👉
Another procession will walk to Calvary with the Cross
The question is not:
👉
“Which procession did Jesus walk?”
The question is:
👉
“Which procession will you walk?”
👉 The crowd followed the first
👉
Only disciples followed the second
🔥 “It is
easy to walk with palms…
but it is costly to walk with the Cross.”
🎯 2.
THEME
👉 Welcoming Christ is easy… Following Him to the Cross is costly
📖 3.
BIBLICAL FOUNDATION
• Isaiah 50:4–7 — The Suffering Servant
• Psalm 22 — “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
• Philippians 2:6–11 — Christ’s self-emptying
• Matthew 26:14—27:66 — The Passion of Christ
🌿 4. MAIN
MESSAGE
🌳 THE
SYMBOL OF PALMS — A FALSE EXPECTATION OF VICTORY
📖 (Matthew 21:8)
The people
shouted:
👉 “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
They were
sincere…
👉 but they were also mistaken
They
thought:
👉 Jesus will remove their problems
👉 Jesus will defeat their enemies
👉 Jesus will establish a visible kingdom
But Jesus
came for something deeper:
👉 not to change their situation
👉 but to change their hearts
Palm
branches were a symbol of victory and nationalism
But Christ’s victory was not political
👉 it was spiritual
👉 it was eternal
⚠️ WE STILL CARRY THE SAME
MISUNDERSTANDING
Even today,
many Christians live Palm Sunday…
👉 but refuse Good Friday
We want:
• blessings without repentance
• miracles without conversion
• glory without sacrifice
We say:
👉 “Lord, save me”
But we do not say:
👉 “Lord, change me”
💡 Deep
Truth: The Cross Is Not Optional — It Is Essential
👉 There is
no Christianity without the Cross
👉 There is no salvation without sacrifice
Palm Sunday
teaches us:
👉 If you accept Christ only as a miracle worker
👉 you will reject Him as a suffering Savior
🌍 Illustration
A student
wants success…
👉 but avoids study
A patient
wants healing…bb
👉 but avoids treatment
A Christian
wants heaven…
👉 but avoids the Cross
Saint Augustine of Hippo teaches:
👉 “God does not promise a life without suffering… but a life where
suffering has meaning.”
🔥 zzzz.’’
👉 Palm
branches fade… but the Cross saves
👉 Don’t celebrate a Christ you are not ready to follow
🌵 THE
DONKEY OF PEACE — THE KING WHO REJECTS POWER
📖 (Matthew 21:5)
🔥 A King
Who Shocks Human Expectations
In ancient
times:
👉 A king on a horse = war
👉 A king on a donkey = peace
Jesus
deliberately chooses the donkey
This is not
accidental
👉 this is a revelation
He is
saying:
👉 “I have not come to destroy… but to save”
⚠️ Reality / Problem: We
Misunderstand Power
We admire:
👉 strength
👉 control
👉 dominance
We think
power means:
👉 winning arguments
👉 controlling people
👉 avoiding weakness
But Jesus
shows:
👉 true power is self-control
👉 true strength is sacrificial love
💡 Deep
Truth: God’s Power Is Hidden in Humility
👉 The
greatest power in the universe is not force… but love
The donkey
becomes a throne
👉 because humility is the language of God
🌍 Illustration
Think of a
mother caring for a sick child all night
No applause
No recognition
Yet that
quiet love
👉 is more powerful than any ruler
Saint Francis of Assisi shows us:
👉 when you choose humility, you choose Christ
🔥 If you are
too proud to be humble… you are too far from Christ
👉 God will not shout to enter your life… He comes gently
🌿 THE
CLOAKS ON THE ROAD — THE CALL TO TOTAL SURRENDER
📖 (Matthew 21:8)
🔥 Not
Just Honour — A Sign of Total Self-Giving
In biblical
culture, a cloak was not just clothing
👉 it represented identity
👉 security
👉 dignity
When they
laid their cloaks…
👉 they were saying:
“Lord, everything I have is Yours”
⚠️ Reality / Problem: We
Hold Back Ourselves
We give
Jesus:
👉 prayers… but not habits
👉 time… but not priorities
👉 devotion… but not decisions
We want
Jesus as Savior
👉 but not as Lord
💡 Deep
Truth: Surrender Opens the Door to Transformation
👉 God cannot
transform what you do not surrender
The Cross
begins
👉 where control ends
🌍 Illustration
A person
drowning cannot be saved
👉 if he keeps struggling against the rescuer
He must
surrender
👉 to be saved
Saint Ignatius of Loyola prayed total surrender:
👉 “Take, Lord, receive all…”
🔥 Don’t
place your clothes… place your life
👉 What you don’t surrender… will control you
🌸 FROM
HOSANNA TO CRUCIFY — THE DRAMA OF THE HUMAN HEART
📖 (Matthew 27:22)
🔥 The Same Crowd… The Same Lips… A Different Cry
On Palm
Sunday, the crowd shouted:
👉 “Hosanna! Save us!”
Just a few
days later, the same city shouted:
👉 “Crucify Him!”
Pause and
reflect:
👉 What changed?
Did Jesus
change? — No
Did His love change? — No
Did His truth change? — No
👉 The only
thing that changed… was the human heart
🔥 The Danger of a Misunderstood Messiah
The people
welcomed Jesus…
👉 but only according to their expectations
They
wanted:
• a political savior
• a miracle-working king
• a problem-solving Messiah
But when
Jesus did not fit their expectations…
👉 admiration turned into rejection
👉 This is
the tragedy:
They did not reject Jesus because He was wrong
👉 They rejected Him because He was different
⚠️ Reality / Problem:
Conditional Faith — Loving God on Our Terms
Let us be
honest…
How many
times have we said:
👉 “Lord, I trust You”
But inside
we mean:
👉 “Lord, as long as You do what I want”
When life
is good:
👉 we sing Hosanna
When
prayers are unanswered:
👉 we become silent
When
suffering comes:
👉 we begin to question
When God
asks sacrifice:
👉 we begin to withdraw
👉 This is
Palm Sunday spirituality without Good Friday commitment
🔥 The Psychology of the Crowd — Why People Change So Fast
The crowd
is powerful… but dangerous
On Sunday:
👉 they followed emotion
On Friday:
👉 they followed pressure
They were
influenced by:
• leaders
• fear
• public opinion
👉 The crowd
does not think deeply
👉 it reacts quickly
And today?
Social
media… society… culture…
👉 The same
crowd mentality exists
People
follow trends
👉 not truth
People
follow noise
👉 not conviction
💡 Deep
Truth: True Faith Is Not Emotional — It Is Covenantal
👉 Faith is
not excitement
👉 Faith is commitment
Hosanna is
easy
👉 Standing at the Cross is difficult
Anybody can
praise Jesus
👉 Only a disciple can suffer with Him
👉 Real faith
says:
“Even if I do not understand… I will still follow”
🔥 The Silent Witnesses — Who Stayed?
When the
crowd left…
Who
remained?
👉 A few
women
👉 Saint John the Apostle
👉 The broken… but faithful
They had no
power
They had no voice
But they
had something greater:
👉 fidelity
🌍 Illustration:
Love That Is Tested Is Love That Is True
A person
who says:
👉 “I love you” in comfort
But leaves
in suffering
👉 never truly loved
Marriage…
friendship… vocation…
👉 All are
tested in pain
Faith is
the same
🔥 The
Inner Betrayals — The Passion Is Happening Inside Us
Palm Sunday
is not about “those people long ago”
👉 It is
about us today
We shout
“Hosanna” when:
• we pray
• we attend Mass
• we feel spiritual
But we
shout “Crucify Him” when:
• we choose sin knowingly
• we refuse forgiveness
• we ignore God’s voice
• we compromise truth
👉 Every sin
is a silent “Crucify Him”
👉 Every
compromise is a hidden betrayal
💡 Deeper
Theological Insight: The Mystery of Freedom and Love
Why does
God allow this rejection?
Because:
👉 Love cannot be forced
God gives
freedom
👉 even the freedom to reject Him
And yet…
Even when
we shout “Crucify Him”
👉 Christ responds with:
“Father, forgive them”
👉 This is
divine love
Not
reactive
👉 but redemptive
Saint Peter
denied Jesus three times
But when he
encountered Christ again
👉 he wept
👉 That is
the turning point
Not
perfection
👉 but repentance
🔥 Don’t let your Hosanna become a Crucify
👉 Don’t follow Jesus only when it is easy
👉 The real
question is not:
“Do you praise Him?”
👉 The real
question is:
“Will you stay when it costs you everything?”
👉 Crowds
disappear…
👉 True disciples remain
👉 Be
careful…
The loudest Hosanna
can become
the harshest Crucify
🔥 “Today you
hold palms in your hands…
But what are you holding in your heart?”
🔍 5.
SPIRITUAL DIAGNOSIS
👉 Let us ask ourselves:
• Do I follow Jesus only when it is convenient?
• Have I truly surrendered my life… or only my words?
• Am I ready to walk with Christ into suffering?
🌱 6.
ILLUSTRATION
A king once visited a village in disguise.
Some welcomed him… others ignored him.
Later, when
he revealed himself
👉 only those who recognized him in humility were rewarded
👉 Christ
comes quietly…
Do we recognize Him?
📖 7.
THEOLOGICAL INSIGHT
👉 The readings reveal one mystery:
From Isaiah
— The obedient suffering servant
From Psalm 22 — The cry of abandonment
From Philippians — The self-emptying God
From Matthew — The fulfilment in the Passion
👉 This is Kenosis
— God empties Himself to save us
Salvation
is not God staying distant
👉 but God entering our suffering
🌍 8.
PASTORAL REFLECTION
Today’s world seeks:
👉 success without sacrifice
👉 glory without suffering
👉 religion without commitment
But Palm
Sunday challenges us:
In family
👉 love even when it hurts
In society
👉 stand for truth even when rejected
In faith
👉 remain even in the silence of God
🙏 9. SELF
EXAMINATION
👉 Reflect deeply:
• What “palm branches” am I holding — false expectations?
• What “cloak” am I refusing to surrender?
• What “cross” am I avoiding?
⚡ 10. THE CALL OF THE HOUR
👉 God is asking us today:
• Move from celebration to commitment
• From emotion to transformation
• From following the crowd… to following Christ
🎯 11.
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
👉 Don’t just welcome Jesus with palms… walk with Him to Calvary
👉 The real test of faith is not Hosanna… but the Cross
🔥 12.
CONCLUSION
Palm Sunday
is a doorway
A doorway
into the greatest mystery of love
Jesus
enters Jerusalem today
👉 not to take a throne
👉 but to embrace a Cross
He enters
your life today
Will you
welcome Him only with palms?
Or will you walk with Him to Calvary?
Choose
today
Not just to
celebrate Christ
👉 but to follow Him
🔥 “TODAY IS
THE DAY OF DECISION”
My dear
brothers and sisters,
Today you
are not just listening
👉 You are
choosing
Choosing:
• Palms or Cross
• Crowd or Christ
• Comfort or Conversion
🔥 FINAL
CALL
👉 “Don’t
leave this church the same”
👉 “Don’t
carry only palms in your hands…
carry conviction in your heart”
👉 “Don’t
just admire Christ…
decide for Christ”
🙏 13. Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You entered Jerusalem with humility
and accepted the Cross with love.
Teach us to
welcome You
not only in joy… but in suffering.
Give us the
grace
to surrender our lives completely.
Remove our
false expectations
and deepen our faith.
Help us to
remain with You
in moments of trial and darkness.
Strengthen
us to carry our crosses
with courage and trust.
May we
follow You faithfully
from Palm Sunday
to the glory of Resurrection.
Amen.
