HOMILY: “The Power Hidden in the Child Jesus”, Thursday Special Devotion to the Infant Jesus

“The Power Hidden in the Child Jesus”

1. Introduction – The Mystery of the Child

My dear brothers and sisters,

Today, we reflect on a beautiful devotion in the Church: the devotion to the Infant Jesus.

At first glance, it seems strange.

Why do Christians pray to a child?

A child appears:

  • weak
  • small
  • dependent

Yet the Child Jesus is the Saviour of the world.

This reveals a profound truth:

God saves the world not through power, but through humility.

The Origin of the Devotion to the Infant Jesus

The devotion to the Infant Jesus has a beautiful and inspiring history in the Church.

The roots of this devotion go back to the early centuries of Christianity when believers lovingly reflected on the mystery of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Christians meditated on the words of the Gospel of Luke:

“Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)

But a special development of this devotion took place in Prague.

The Infant Jesus of Prague

In the 16th century a small statue of the Child Jesus was brought to the city of Prague.

This statue later came into the care of the Carmelite Fathers.

During times of war and hardship the Carmelites and the faithful prayed before the Infant Jesus.

Many extraordinary blessings and miracles were reported.

People experienced:

• protection in danger
• healing from sickness
• peace in troubled families
• financial help in difficult times
• spiritual conversions

Because of these blessings the devotion spread throughout Europe and later throughout the entire world.

Today millions of Christians lovingly pray to the Infant Jesus of Prague.

The Message Given Through This Devotion

According to tradition, the Infant Jesus revealed a beautiful message to the faithful.

He said:

“The more you honour me as the Child Jesus, the more I will bless you.”

This does not mean that God gives blessings automatically like magic.

Rather, the devotion invites us to develop a childlike relationship with Jesus.

When we approach Him with trust and humility, we open our hearts to receive God's grace.

2. Biblical Foundation – God Comes as a Child

The prophet Isaiah foretold this mystery:

Isaiah 9:6

“A child is born to us, a son is given to us.”

Not a king with armies.
Not a warrior with weapons.

But a child.

When Jesus was born:

  • There was no palace
  • No throne
  • No royal celebration

Only:

  • a stable
  • animals
  • shepherds

God entered the world in poverty and simplicity.

3. Why Did God Become a Child?

There are deep spiritual reasons.

1. To Remove Fear

If God came as a powerful king, many would fear Him.

But when God comes as a child, no one is afraid.

Even the poorest shepherd could approach Him.

2. To Teach Humility

The world worships power.

But Jesus teaches:

True greatness is humility.

Philippians 2:7

“He emptied himself.”

3. To Teach Trust

A child completely trusts the parents.

Jesus invites us to live with the same trust in God.

4. The Spiritual Message of the Infant Jesus

The Infant Jesus teaches three great lessons.

Lesson 1 – Become Childlike

Jesus said:

Matthew 18:3

“Unless you become like little children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Childlike means:

  • simplicity
  • trust
  • purity of heart

Many adults lose these qualities.

The devotion to the Infant Jesus reminds us to recover the heart of a child.

Lesson 2 – God Works Through Small Things

The world admires big achievements.

But God often works through small beginnings.

A child in Bethlehem
changed the history of the world.

Never underestimate small acts of love.

Lesson 3 – God Enters Our Broken World

The stable of Bethlehem was not perfect.

It was poor and humble.

Yet Jesus chose to be born there.

This means:

Jesus is not afraid of the messiness of human life.

He enters:

  • broken families
  • wounded hearts
  • sinful lives

to bring healing.

5. Spiritual Diagnosis

Today many people suffer from a spiritual disease:

The disease of self-sufficiency.

People think:

“I do not need God.”

But deep inside they feel:

  • emptiness
  • restlessness
  • loneliness

The Infant Jesus reminds us:

We are all children before God.

6. Illustration – The Power of a Child

Once a hardened soldier visited a church.

He saw the statue of the Infant Jesus.

He laughed and said:

“How can a child save the world?”

But slowly he noticed something.

People were kneeling.

They were crying.

They were praying with faith.

He realized:

Power does not come from strength.

Power comes from love.

And love is strongest in the heart of a child.

7. Pastoral Reflection – The Church as a Healing Place

The Church is like an operation theatre for the soul.

People come wounded by life.

And the Word of God acts like spiritual medicine.

When we meditate on the Infant Jesus:

Our pride is healed.
Our fear is healed.
Our hearts become gentle again.

8. The Call of the Hour

Today the world needs the spirituality of Bethlehem.

A spirituality of:

  • humility
  • simplicity
  • trust in God
  • love for the poor

If families learn these values, society will change.

9. A Simple Devotion for Every Thursday

Many Christians practice a special devotion every Thursday.

Some simple ways to honour the Infant Jesus include:

• lighting a candle before the image of the Child Jesus
• praying with trust and simplicity
• reading a passage about the birth of Jesus
• offering acts of kindness to children or the poor

This devotion reminds us that God listens to the prayer of a humble heart.

Spiritual Blessings Promised Through This Devotion

Those who practice devotion to the Infant Jesus with sincere faith often experience many spiritual fruits.

1. Growth in Trust in God

The Infant Jesus teaches us to depend on God like a child depends on parents.

This removes anxiety and fear.

2. Peace in Families

Families who pray together to the Infant Jesus often experience:

• reconciliation
• unity
• healing of relationships

3. Protection in Difficult Situations

Many faithful testify that they received help during:

• financial struggles
• illness
• family crises
• moments of great distress

4. Conversion of Hearts

The greatest blessing is spiritual conversion.

People who were far from God rediscover faith and return to prayer.

10. Conclusion – The Child Who Holds the World

The Infant Jesus appears small.

But in that tiny child lies the power of salvation.

The hands of that child created the universe.

The heart of that child loves every human being.

When we kneel before the Infant Jesus, we remember:

God does not conquer the world by force.

He conquers it through love.

And that love began in the humble cradle of Bethlehem.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Divine Child of Bethlehem,

Teach us to become simple and humble.
Remove pride from our hearts.
Help us trust God as a child trusts the parents.

May our lives become instruments of Your love.

Bless our families,
heal our wounds,
and lead us closer to You every day.

Amen.
