HOMILY: "International Women’s Day" Theme: “The Dignity, Strength, and Sacred Mission of Women”
International Women’s Day
Theme: “The Dignity, Strength, and Sacred Mission of Women”
1. Introduction – A Day to Recognise a Sacred Gift
My dear
brothers and sisters,
Today, we
reflect on a beautiful and meaningful occasion celebrated worldwide: International
Women’s Day.
This day is
not merely a social celebration.
It is a day to pause, reflect, and recognise one of the most precious gifts
God has given to humanity — the gift of women.
From the
beginning of creation, women have been part of God’s divine plan.
When God
created the world, He created the heavens, the earth, the oceans, the
mountains, and every living creature.
Yet, when God created the human person, He said something very profound:
“It is not
good for man to be alone.”
And so God
created woman.
A woman was
not created as an afterthought.
She was created as a companion, partner, and co-worker in God’s plan.
Where there
is a woman, there is life.
Where there is a woman, there is care.
Where there is a woman, there is sacrifice.
Behind
every family, every generation, every culture, every society — there is the
silent strength of women.
2. The Beauty of God’s Design for Women
God created
women with unique gifts.
A woman has
a special capacity for love.
A mother
carries a child for nine months.
She experiences pain, discomfort, and sacrifice.
Yet when
the child is born, she forgets all the pain because of love.
A woman has
the power to transform a house into a home.
A house is
made of bricks.
But a home is made of love, care, patience, and sacrifice.
And very
often, it is a woman who builds that home.
Women are
not only life-givers, but also life-nurturers.
They
nurture children.
They nurture families.
They nurture communities.
Society
often measures success by power, money, and achievements.
But the success of women is often hidden in quiet sacrifices.
Many
mothers wake up early, work all day, care for children, serve their families,
and still carry worries in their hearts.
Their work
is not always seen.
Their sacrifices are not always appreciated.
But in the
eyes of God, nothing is hidden.
God sees
every mother's sacrifice.
God sees every woman's tear.
God sees every act of love.
3. Women in the Bible – Chosen by God
The Bible
is filled with the stories of strong and faithful women.
God did not
choose only men to accomplish His mission.
He also
chose women.
Let us
remember a few of them.
Eve – The Mother of Humanity
Eve is
called the mother of all living.
Through
her, humanity began.
Even though
humanity fell into sin, God never abandoned His plan for humanity.
Ruth – The Woman of Loyalty
Ruth showed
extraordinary loyalty.
When her
mother-in-law Naomi lost everything, Ruth said:
“Where you
go, I will go.
Your people shall be my people.”
Her loyalty
became a blessing.
She later
became part of the lineage of the Messiah.
Esther – The Woman of Courage
Queen
Esther risked her life to save her people.
At a moment
of danger, she stood before the king and spoke for justice.
Her courage
saved an entire nation.
The Samaritan Woman – The First Missionary
One day
Jesus met a woman at a well.
Society
rejected her.
People
judged her.
But Jesus
did not reject her.
He spoke
with her, restored her dignity, and revealed Himself to her.
After that
encounter, she ran to the village and told everyone about Jesus.
She became
one of the first missionaries.
4. Mary – The Greatest Model of Womanhood
Above all
women stands one extraordinary woman — Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
When the
angel announced God’s plan, Mary was a young and simple woman.
Yet she
responded with great faith:
“Let it be
done to me according to your word.”
Mary
teaches us three powerful virtues.
1. Faith
Mary
trusted God even when she did not fully understand His plan.
2. Humility
Mary never
sought fame or recognition.
She lived
quietly but faithfully.
3. Courage
Mary stood
near the Cross while her Son was crucified.
Her heart
was pierced with sorrow.
Yet she
remained faithful.
Mary shows
us that true greatness is found in faithfulness to God.
5. The Hidden Strength of Women in Society
My dear
friends,
Women are
the silent pillars of society.
Many women
carry burdens that the world does not see.
Some women
work both at home and outside.
Some women
raise children alone.
Some women
suffer from injustice, discrimination, or violence.
Yet many
women continue to love, serve, and sacrifice.
Think about
teachers who shape young minds.
Think about
nurses who care for the sick.
Think about
mothers who sacrifice everything for their children.
Think about
grandmothers who keep faith alive in families.
Society
stands because women stand.
When women
suffer, society suffers.
When women
flourish, society flourishes.
6. A Message to Men
Today is
also a day for men to reflect.
The dignity
of women must be respected.
Women are
not objects.
Women are not inferior.
They are equal
partners in God’s creation.
A good
society is one where women are respected, protected, and supported.
True
strength is not domination.
True
strength is respect and love.
A man who
respects women honors God.
7. A Message to Women
To all
women:
You are
valuable.
You are precious.
You are loved by God.
Your role
in the world is sacred.
Sometimes
society may overlook your sacrifices.
Sometimes
your efforts may go unnoticed.
But
remember:
God sees
everything.
Your love
changes lives.
Your sacrifices build families.
Your faith shapes the next generation.
Never
underestimate your mission.
You are
instruments of God's love in the world.
8. The Challenges Women Still Face
Even today,
many women face challenges:
- inequality
- violence
- discrimination
- lack of opportunities
As a
society, we must work to ensure that every woman is respected and protected.
Justice for
women is not only a social issue.
It is a moral
responsibility.
9. The Mission of Women in Today’s World
Women today
are called to transform society with their gifts.
Women bring
compassion into leadership.
Women bring
sensitivity into decision-making.
Women bring
patience into difficult situations.
The world
today needs more compassion, empathy, and understanding.
These are
qualities many women embody deeply.
10. A Story – The Power of a Mother
Let me
share a simple story.
A young man
once became very successful in life.
One day, a
journalist asked him:
“What is
the secret of your success?”
He replied:
“My
mother.”
The
journalist asked, “Why?”
He said:
“When I was
young, I failed many times.
But my mother never stopped believing in me.”
Because one
woman believed in him, his life changed.
Never
underestimate the power of a mother's encouragement.
11. A Call to Society
Today, let
us make a commitment.
Let us
build a society where:
- girls are educated
- women are respected
- mothers are supported
- daughters are protected
- women’s voices are heard
A society
that honours women becomes a society of peace.
12. Gratitude to Women
Today we
thank:
- mothers
- grandmothers
- sisters
- teachers
- caregivers
- workers
- leaders
- daughters
Thank you
for your love.
Thank you
for your sacrifices.
Thank you
for the countless ways you make the world a better place.
13. Conclusion – Women: The Heart of Humanity
My dear
brothers and sisters,
If you
remove women from history, the world would collapse.
Families
would disappear.
Love would
fade.
Hope would
weaken.
Women are
the heart of humanity.
Today, we
celebrate not only achievements but the sacred dignity of every woman.
Let us honour
women not only today, but every day.
14. Prayer
Let us
pray.
Loving and
gracious God,
We thank
You for the gift of women in our lives.
We thank
You for mothers who give life,
for daughters who bring joy,
for sisters who offer companionship,
and for all women who serve humanity with love.
Bless every
woman in our families and communities.
Give
strength to those who suffer,
hope to those who struggle,
and joy to those who serve.
May our
society grow in respect, justice, and dignity for every woman.
And may the
example of Mary inspire all women to live with faith, courage, and love.
We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
