BARABBAS – THE DANGEROUS EXCHANGE

“Christ is still standing before us… waiting to be chosen.”

“Barabbas walks free whenever truth is left without a defender.”

Matthew 27:21

🔹 1. INTRODUCTION – A SHOCKING QUESTION

My dear brothers and sisters,

Today, a question that disturbs our conscience:

👉 If Jesus stood before us today… and Barabbas stood beside Him… whom would we choose?

Before you answer quickly, remember:

👉 The crowd that chose Barabbas was not a pagan crowd
👉 They were religious people
👉 They were people of the temple
👉 They were people who knew God

And yet…

👉 They chose a criminal over Christ
👉 They chose violence over holiness
👉 They chose darkness over light

This is not just a story of the past.

👉 This is the story of today.

👉 “The crowd chose Barabbas once… are we choosing him again today?”

👉 “When truth stands before us, silence becomes betrayal.”

🔹 2. BIBLICAL FOUNDATION

Matthew 27:21

“Which of the two do you want me to release for you?”
They said, “Barabbas.”

Barabbas was:

  • A rebel
  • A criminal
  • A man of violence

Jesus was:

  • The Son of God
  • The healer
  • The Savior

And yet…

👉 The crowd preferred Barabbas.

👉 “Not every shout is right—sometimes the crowd crucifies the truth.”

👉 “Choosing wrongly is easy… living with that choice is eternal.”

🔹 3. WHAT IS THE “DANGEROUS EXCHANGE”?

This moment is one of the most terrifying moments in history.

👉 The innocent is rejected
👉 The guilty is accepted

👉 Truth is rejected
👉 Falsehood is celebrated

👉 God is pushed aside
👉 Evil is promoted

This is the dangerous exchange.

And my dear brothers and sisters,

👉 This exchange is still happening today.

👉 “The most dangerous sin is calling evil ‘acceptable.’”

👉 “Your choice reveals your heart more than your words.”

🔹 4. BARABBAS IS NOT JUST A PERSON – IT IS A MINDSET

Barabbas is not just a man in history.

👉 Barabbas is a mentality.

A Barabbas mindset is:

  • Choosing power over truth
  • Choosing profit over justice
  • Choosing influence over holiness
  • Choosing manipulation over sincerity

👉 Wherever truth is rejected… Barabbas is chosen
👉 Wherever corruption is tolerated… Barabbas is chosen
👉 Wherever holiness is ignored… Barabbas is chosen

👉 “We don’t just choose leaders—we choose the future.”

👉 “Every silent approval is a hidden decision.”

🔹 5. THE SILENT TRAGEDY IN TODAY’S WORLD

Let us look at the world:

  • Corrupt leaders are celebrated
  • Dishonest people rise quickly
  • Truthful people are pushed aside
  • Good people are ignored

👉 Why?

Because people prefer:

  • Comfort over conscience
  • Benefit over truth
  • Group loyalty over righteousness

👉 “When conscience sleeps, Barabbas rises.”

👉 “The tragedy is not evil… but choosing it knowingly.”

🔹 6. A MIRROR FOR THE SOCIETY (WITH LOVE AND TRUTH)

My dear brothers and sisters,

This is not a message of anger…
This is a message of awakening.

Even within the Society…

👉 Sometimes Barabbas is chosen.

Not openly… but silently.

  • When influence matters more than holiness
  • When connections matter more than character
  • When power matters more than service

👉 Then Barabbas is chosen again.

And what happens?

  • The Church becomes weak
  • The mission becomes compromised
  • The faithful become confused

👉 “When holiness is ignored, corruption finds a place.”

👉 “The Church weakens not by enemies… but by wrong choices within.”

🔹 7. WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE BARABBAS?

Let us go deeper.

1. Fear

People fear losing position, security, or approval.

2. Group Pressure

The crowd shouted together.

👉 No one wanted to stand alone.

3. Hidden Benefit

Barabbas benefits certain groups.

4. Blindness of Heart

Sin blinds the conscience.

👉 “Influence without integrity leads to spiritual collapse.”

👉 “Where truth is compromised, Christ is silently rejected.”

🔹 8. THE SILENCE OF PILATE

Pilate knew the truth.

👉 Yet he washed his hands.

This is another danger.

👉 Not choosing evil directly…
👉 But allowing evil silently.

How many times do we say:

  • “It is not my problem”
  • “Let it happen”
  • “I will not get involved”

👉 That is Pilate’s silence.

👉 “A holy Church begins with honest choices.”

👉 “Between the silence of truth and the noise of the crowd, a soul makes its eternal choice.”

👉 “Christ stands wounded in quiet love… while Barabbas walks free in the applause of many.”

🔹 9. GLOBAL ILLUSTRATION

In many parts of the world:

  • Honest leaders are removed
  • Corrupt systems are protected
  • Whistleblowers are punished

Why?

👉 Because truth disturbs comfort.

👉 “Rejecting Christ is not always loud—it is often silent.”

👉 “Every wrong choice echoes again at the Cross.”

🔹 10. THE VOICE OF THE SAINTS

Saint Catherine of Siena said:

“Speak the truth in love, but never replace truth with silence.”

Saint John Paul II said:

“The greatest danger is not evil itself, but the normalisation of evil.”

Saint Augustine said:

“Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.”

🔹 11. A POWERFUL STORY

There was once a village where two men stood for leadership:

  • One was honest, truthful, and simple
  • The other was clever, manipulative, and powerful

The people chose the second man.

Why?

👉 Because he promised benefits.

Years later:

  • The village became divided
  • Corruption spread
  • Trust disappeared

Then people realized:

👉 They did not just choose a leader
👉 They chose their future

👉 “The Cross rises again wherever truth is abandoned for the comfort of darkness.”

👉 “In the marketplace of voices, we traded the Lamb… for what satisfied our moment.”

👉 “He looked at us with mercy… and we answered with a choice we did not understand.”

🔹 12. THE SPIRITUAL MEANING

Barabbas represents:

👉 Sin
👉 Corruption
👉 Selfishness

Jesus represents:

👉 Truth
👉 Sacrifice
👉 Salvation

When Barabbas is chosen:

👉 Sin is released
👉 Christ is crucified again in our lives

👉 “He was rejected once… do not reject Him again.”

👉 “Choosing Christ may cost you… but losing Him costs everything.”

🔹 13. THE PERSONAL QUESTION

Now the question becomes personal:

👉 In my life… whom do I choose?

  • When I support wrong… I choose Barabbas
  • When I remain silent… I choose Barabbas
  • When I ignore truth… I choose Barabbas

👉 “History repeats when conscience is ignored.”

👉 “The world changes when choices change.”

👉 “Not with nails alone, but with our decisions, the Innocent is handed over again.”

🔹 14. SELF EXAMINATION

👉 Reflect deeply:

  • Do I support truth or convenience?
  • Do I stand for justice or remain silent?
  • Do I encourage good people or ignore them?
  • Do I resist corruption or tolerate it?

👉 Remember:

God is watching not only actions…
but also choices and silence.

👉 “The crowd is not always right—truth often stands alone.”

👉 “What we tolerate today becomes our reality tomorrow.”

👉 “The tragedy is not that Christ was rejected once… but that He is gently set aside every day.”

👉 “A whisper of compromise can echo louder than a shout of truth.”

🔹 15. THE CALL OF THE HOUR

This is the call:

👉 Do not be part of the crowd
👉 Do not follow blind voices
👉 Do not support what is wrong

Instead:

  • Stand for truth
  • Support goodness
  • Encourage holiness

Even if you stand alone.

👉 “Evil grows when good people choose comfort over courage.”

👉 “Choose wisely—Christ or Barabbas.”

👉 “The crowd passed judgment quickly… eternity will answer slowly.”

👉 “Where hearts seek gain, the Just One is quietly replaced.”

🔹 16. THE COURAGE OF THE CROSS

Jesus stood alone.

👉 No crowd supported Him
👉 No powerful group defended Him

Yet He remained faithful.

👉 That is true strength.

👉 “Silence can crucify.”

👉 “Truth rejected is Christ rejected.”

👉 “We did not shout ‘Crucify Him’… we simply chose something else.”

👉 “In every age, the same question returns—yet the silence of conscience answers it.”

🔹 17. AN ADVICE WITH LOVE

👉 Every time we choose Barabbas,
we participate in the crucifixion of Christ.

👉 Every time we support wrongdoing,
we weaken the Church.

👉 “Every choice has a Cross.”

👉 “Do not trade Christ.”

👉 “Love stood before us in chains… and we chose freedom without truth.”

👉 “The Innocent was not lost in hatred, but in the preference of many hearts.”

🔹 18. THE HOPE

Even the crowd that shouted “Crucify Him”…

👉 Could be forgiven.

Because Christ said:

“Father, forgive them.”

There is always hope.

👉 “The wrong choice rarely looks evil—it often looks useful.”

👉 “We do not lose Christ suddenly… we replace Him slowly.”

🔹 19. TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

Remember this:

👉 Barabbas is always available
👉 Christ is always present

👉 The difference is our choice

👉 The future of the Church depends on:

  • What we support
  • Whom we promote
  • What we tolerate

👉 “The Cross is not far away—it begins where truth is traded.”

👉 “What we excuse today will one day stand against us.”

👉 “He carried the Cross alone… because we chose not to carry truth with Him.”

🔹 20. CONCLUSION

My dear brothers and sisters,

History is repeating itself.

👉 The question of Pilate is still echoing:

“Whom do you want?”

And today…

👉 Heaven is watching your answer
👉 The Church is shaped by your answer
👉 Your soul is judged by your answer

Do not be part of a blind crowd.

Be a voice of truth.

Be a defender of goodness.

Be a disciple of Christ.

👉 Choose Christ… even if the world chooses Barabbas.

👉 “It is not hatred of Christ that destroys us, but preference for something else.”

👉 “Before judging the crowd, listen closely—its voice may be within you.”

🙏 21. PRAYER

Lord Jesus,

You were rejected for the sake of truth,
and a criminal was chosen over You.

Give us the courage
to always choose what is right.

Remove from our hearts:

  • fear
  • selfishness
  • blind loyalty

Fill us with:

  • truth
  • courage
  • integrity

Lord, save us
from becoming part of the crowd that chooses Barabbas.

Make us faithful to You,
even when it is difficult.

And may our choices
build Your Church
and glorify Your name.

Amen.
