“Mary, Mother of God: The Woman Who Gave God a Human Face”

Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

Introduction: Beginning the Year with a Mother

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
as we stand at the threshold of a New Year, the Church, with great wisdom and tenderness, places before us not a resolution, not a rule, not a commandment—but a Mother.

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.
The very first day of the year is entrusted not to fear, not to uncertainty, but to Mary, the woman who welcomed God into human history.

When the world begins a year with fireworks, noise, and ambition,
the Church begins the year with silence, contemplation, and motherhood.

This feast asks us a simple but profound question:
👉 How do we want to begin this year—by controlling life, or by trusting God like Mary did?

I. First Reading (Numbers 6:22–27): The Blessing of God

The first reading gives us one of the most ancient and beautiful blessings in the Bible:

“The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD let his face shine upon you…”

This is not merely a wish.
It is a promise.

1. A Blessing, Not a Burden

God does not begin the year by threatening us.
He begins it by blessing us.

  • Blessing means God’s favor

  • Blessing means God’s presence

  • Blessing means God’s protection

Mary is the living proof of this blessing.
In her womb, the face of God literally shone upon humanity.

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux beautifully said:

“Through Mary, the eternal blessing reached the earth.”

II. Mary, Mother of God: A Title of Faith

Calling Mary Mother of God is not about glorifying Mary alone.
It is about protecting the truth about Jesus.

1. Why “Mother of God”?

Mary did not create God.
But she truly gave birth to Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully human.

If Jesus is God,
and Mary is His mother,
then Mary is rightly called Mother of God.

This title was solemnly affirmed by the Church in the year 431 AD, not to exalt Mary emotionally, but to safeguard the mystery of the Incarnation.

As Saint Elizabeth proclaimed:

“How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

III. Second Reading (Galatians 4:4–7): God Sent His Son, Born of a Woman

Saint Paul gives us a short but powerful summary of salvation history:

“When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman…”

1. God Chose a Woman

God could have entered the world in any way.
But He chose:

  • A womb

  • A mother

  • A family

This shows us that human life, family life, and motherhood are sacred.

Mary teaches us that God works through ordinary human relationships.

Saint John Paul II said:

“Mary is the bridge by which God crossed into human history.”

2. From Slaves to Children

Paul reminds us that we are no longer slaves, but sons and daughters.

Mary is not only the Mother of Christ—
she becomes Mother of the Church,
Mother of all who are in Christ.

IV. Gospel (Luke 2:16–21): Mary Who Ponders

The shepherds hurry to Bethlehem.
They see the Child.
They return glorifying God.

But Mary does something different:

“Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

1. Mary’s Silence

Mary teaches us a spirituality that the modern world struggles with:
silence.

She does not rush to speak.
She listens.
She reflects.
She prays.

In a noisy world, Mary shows us the power of interior depth.

Saint Augustine said:

“Mary conceived Christ first in her heart before she conceived Him in her womb.”

V. Illustration: The Hands of a Mother

A child once asked his mother,
“Why are your hands rough?”

The mother replied,
“Because I used them to carry you, clean for you, cook for you, and protect you.”

Mary’s hands:

  • Carried God

  • Fed God

  • Protected God

And today, those same maternal hands still intercede for us.

Mary reminds us:
👉 Love always leaves marks—but they are holy marks.

VI. Mary and the New Year: Lessons for Our Lives

1. Mary Teaches Us Trust

She did not know everything.
But she trusted God completely.

This year may bring:

  • Uncertainty

  • Challenges

  • Unexpected turns

Mary tells us:
👉 Trust God one day at a time.

2. Mary Teaches Us Availability

Her “Yes” changed history.

God still looks for people who say:

  • “Yes, Lord”

  • “Use me”

  • “I am here”

3. Mary Teaches Us Peace

Today is also observed as the World Day of Peace.

Mary, the Mother of the Prince of Peace, calls us to:

  • Peace in families

  • Peace in communities

  • Peace in society

There can be no world peace without peaceful hearts.

VII. Application: Living This Feast

  1. Begin each day with God’s blessing

  2. Learn silence and prayer from Mary

  3. Respect life, family, and motherhood

  4. Trust God’s plan for the year

  5. Be instruments of peace

Conclusion: A Mother for the Journey

Dear brothers and sisters,
we do not know what this year will bring.

But we know who walks with us.

A Mother who once held God in her arms
now holds us in her prayers.

As Saint Alphonsus Liguori said:

“He who has Mary as his Mother will never be lost.”

Let us place this year, our families, our struggles, and our hopes
into the hands of Mary, Mother of God.

Closing Prayer

Let us pray.

O Mary, Mother of God,
at the beginning of this new year,
we place our lives into your maternal care.

Teach us to trust when the path is unclear,
to remain silent when words fail,
and to treasure God’s work in our hearts.

Bless our families with peace,
our hearts with faith,
and our year with God’s presence.

Lead us always to your Son,
Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.
