HOMILY: FASTING THAT TRANSFORMS Not Just Hunger of the Body — But Freedom of the Soul
FASTING THAT TRANSFORMS
Not Just Hunger of the Body — But Freedom of the Soul
Dear
brothers and sisters,
Have you
ever noticed something?
We can skip
meals…
But we cannot skip anger.
We can
avoid rice…
But we cannot avoid gossip.
We can
reduce food…
But we do not reduce pride.
During
Lent, many people fast from meat.
But do we fast from jealousy?
Do we fast from harsh words?
Do we fast from hidden addictions?
Here is the
question that begins today’s message:
Are we
starving the body but feeding the devil inside?
This Lent,
God is not asking only for an empty stomach.
He is asking for a purified heart.
And the
repeated line we will remember is:
“Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.”
1. Introduction – What Is True Fasting?
Lent is a
season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
But what is
fasting?
Many think:
- It is reducing food.
- It is eating once a day.
- It is giving up sweets.
But
Scripture reveals something deeper.
Fasting is
not about diet.
It is about discipline.
It is not about weakness.
It is about spiritual strength.
Lent is not
about losing weight.
It is about losing sin.
Lent is:
Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.
2. Biblical Foundation – God’s Understanding of Fasting
Book of Isaiah 58:6
God says:
“Is not
this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free?”
God rejects
empty fasting.
He wants:
- Justice
- Mercy
- Conversion
Gospel of Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus
teaches:
“When you
fast, do not look gloomy…
Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
Fasting is
not performance.
It is purification.
Gospel of Matthew 4:1-11
Jesus
fasted 40 days in the wilderness.
Why?
To conquer
temptation.
He did not
fast to impress people.
He fasted to defeat the devil.
Lent is our
wilderness.
Fasting is our weapon.
Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.
3. The Great Spiritual Contrast
Physical
Fast vs Spiritual Fast
External Sacrifice vs Internal Conversion
Hunger of Body vs Hunger for Holiness
Temporary Discipline vs Eternal Freedom
You can
stop eating meat for 40 days.
But if you do not stop hurting people, what changed?
You can
give up sweets and some foods you may like
But if you do not give up bitterness, what changed?
4. Spiritual Diagnosis – Why We Struggle to Fast Spiritually
Let us be
honest.
The real
problem is not food.
The real
problem is the “devil within.”
Not
possession — but tendencies.
The devil
of:
Physical
weaknesses
- Drinking excessively
- Smoking addiction
- Gambling
- Pornography
- Bad habits
- Cheating
- Corruption
- Jealousy
- Anger
- Gossip
- Using abusive language
- Pride
- Laziness
- Unforgiveness
- Destroying others’ reputation
- Emotional manipulation
- Hidden revenge
We fast
from breakfast.
But we feast on resentment.
We fast
from food.
But we feed our ego.
This Lent,
let the devil inside go hungry.
Starve the
addiction.
Starve the pride.
Starve the jealousy.
Starve the selfishness.
Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.
5. Pastoral Reflection.
People who
conquer small habits grow spiritually strong.
But those
who ignore small sins slowly become spiritually weak.
A small,
unchecked habit becomes a chain.
A chain becomes slavery.
Fasting
breaks chains.
6. Saints and the Power of Fasting
Saint Augustine of Hippo
He said:
“Fasting
cleanses the soul, raises the mind, subjects one’s flesh to the spirit.”
He himself
struggled with weakness before conversion.
But discipline prepared him for grace.
Saint John Chrysostom
He said:
“Do you
fast? Give me proof by your works.”
Not by
hunger —
But by kindness.
7. Practical Application – How to Do Spiritual Fasting
This Lenten
practice involves fasting:
1.
Fast of the Body
Follow Holy Mother Church's discipline faithfully.
2.
Fast of the Tongue
- No gossip.
- No harsh words.
- No complaining.
3.
Fast of the Heart
- Forgive someone.
- Avoid jealousy.
- Reject comparison.
4.
Fast of the Eyes
- Avoid impurity.
- Avoid negative media.
5.
Fast of the Ego
- Admit mistakes.
- Say sorry.
- Accept correction.
In this
Lenten season, we have to try to practise:
Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.
8. Self-Examination
Ask
yourself honestly:
- What habit is controlling me?
- What weakness am I hiding?
- What sin am I protecting?
- What is God asking me to surrender this Lent?
9. The Call of the Hour
Imagine if
this entire parish truly fasted spiritually.
If:
- Drunkards stopped drinking.
- Families stopped shouting.
- Youth stopped gambling.
- Tongues stopped gossiping.
- Hearts stopped hating.
This parish
would become powerful.
Lent is not
about looking religious.
It is about becoming holy.
Christ
fasted to defeat Satan.
This Lent,
let us fast to defeat the devil within.
Not
tomorrow.
Not next week.
Today.
Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.
10.
Weekly Action
This week:
Choose ONE
habit.
Only one.
And say:
“For 7
days, I will fast from this.”
Not many
promises.
One concrete surrender.
11.
The Message to Carry Home
If you
remember only one line today, remember this:
“Fasting is
not about emptying the stomach; it is about cleansing the soul.”
12.
Conclusion
My dear
brothers and sisters,
God is not
asking you to be perfect overnight.
He is
asking you to begin.
Even if you
fall, rise again.
Grace is
stronger than addiction.
Mercy is stronger than weakness.
Christ is stronger than the devil within.
This Lent
can change your life.
Do not
waste it.
Fast from
sin. Feast on grace.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father,
Teach us
true fasting.
Not only the hunger of the body,
But hunger for holiness.
Help us to
starve the sin within us,
And nourish the grace You give us.
Break every
chain,
Heal every weakness,
Purify every heart.
May this
Lenten season transform us,
Strengthen us,
And draw us closer to You.
We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
