HOMILY: FAMILY “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
FAMILY
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
(Joshua 24:15)
1. Introduction
My dear
brothers and sisters in Christ,
Before
there was a Church building…
Before there was a temple…
Before there was a nation…
There was a
family.
The Bible
does not begin with a cathedral.
It begins with a wedding.
In the Book of Genesis, God creates man and
woman and blesses their union. The first covenant was not political — it was
marital. The first sanctuary was not stone — it was a home.
The family
is:
- The first school of love
- The first school of forgiveness
- The first school of prayer
- The first experience of God
If the
family is strong, the Church is strong.
If the family collapses, society collapses.
Today, we
reflect deeply on God’s dream for the family.
2. The Cry of the Human Heart
Let us be
honest.
Families
today are tired.
Spouses
feel unappreciated.
Parents feel overwhelmed.
Children feel misunderstood.
Elderly feel forgotten.
Many homes
are connected by Wi-Fi — but disconnected in heart.
Illustration: The Silent Dinner Table
A mother
once noticed that during dinner, no one spoke.
Father was on his phone.
Children were scrolling.
Television was on.
One evening
she said, “No phones at the table.”
The first
few days were awkward. Silence.
Then slowly conversation began.
Then sharing.
Then laughter.
Then prayer.
Healing
began not with a miracle — but with one decision.
The cry of
the human heart today is simple:
“Can my
home become a place of peace again?”
3. The Message from the Bible
(1) Joshua 24:15
“As for me
and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua does
not speak as a politician.
He speaks as a father.
He
understands: Faith begins at home.
It is not
enough that the parish prays.
The house must pray.
This is a
daily decision.
Not once at marriage — but every day.
Christ
becomes the new Joshua who leads families not just into a land — but into
eternal life.
(2) Psalm 128
“Blessed
are those who fear the Lord.”
The Psalm
describes:
- Wife is like a fruitful vine
- Children like olive shoots
This is not
a guarantee of comfort.
It is a promise of blessing.
God’s
blessing is not the absence of struggle.
It is His presence within it.
(3) Ephesians 5:21–33
From the
Epistle to the Ephesians:
“Love one
another out of reverence for Christ.”
Marriage is
not domination.
It is self-giving love.
Husbands —
love as Christ loved.
How did Christ love? He died.
Wives —
respect as the Church honors Christ.
Marriage is
not 50–50.
It is 100–100.
Illustration: The Three-Legged Stool
Marriage is
like a three-legged stool:
- Husband
- Wife
- God
Remove God
— balance is lost.
Ecclesiastes
says:
“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
(4) Gospel – The Holy Family
Jesus
Christ lived 30 years in a family.
Mary and Joseph raised the Son of God.
Thirty
hidden years.
Thirty ordinary years.
Nazareth
teaches:
- Silence
- Work
- Obedience
- Prayer
If Jesus
chose family life, family life is sacred.
Illustration: The Cracked Pot
A water
bearer had two pots. One cracked, one perfect.
The cracked pot felt ashamed because it leaked water.
But along
the path where it leaked, flowers bloomed.
Every
family has cracks:
Arguments. Weakness. Imperfections.
In God’s
hands, even cracks water flowers.
Saintly Wisdom – St. Monica
Monica
prayed for her son for 17 years.
Her son became Augustine of Hippo.
Some of you
are crying for your children.
Do not stop praying.
4. Key Biblical Verse of the Day
“As for me
and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Put it in
your heart.
Put it in your home.
5. Spiritual Diagnosis
What is the
real disease in families?
Not lack of
money.
Not lack of education.
The real
disease:
- Pride
- Unforgiveness
- Absence of prayer
- Ego
When prayer
disappears, peace disappears.
6. Spiritual Contrast & Divine Remedy
|
World’s Way |
God’s Way |
|
“I deserve better.” |
“I will serve.” |
|
Ego |
Humility |
|
Control |
Sacrifice |
|
Give up |
Start again |
Illustration: The Candle in the Storm
A family
faced bankruptcy. Someone asked,
“Why still pray?”
The father
said,
“When storm comes, do you blow out the candle — or protect it?”
Prayer
protects the flame.
7. Pastoral Reflection
My dear
families,
Do not
compare your home to others.
Do not give up during storms.
Parents —
your children need presence more than presents.
Children — your parents need respect more than perfection.
Spouses — choose each other daily.
Make your
home:
- A place of prayer
- A place of forgiveness
- A place of joy
8. Self-Examination
Enter
silence.
Ask
yourself:
- Do we pray together?
- Do I forgive quickly?
- Do I speak harshly?
- Is Christ central in my home?
(Allow
pause.)
What must I
surrender?
9. The Call of the Hour
The family
is under spiritual attack.
If families
fail, faith declines.
God is
asking now:
Restore the altar in your home.
This is
urgent.
Children
are shaped more by screens than Scripture.
Choose
today.
10. Weekly Action
One action:
Pray together 10 minutes daily.
One prayer
practice:
Bless your children before sleep.
One
discipline:
One meal daily without phones.
11. The Echo and Take-Home Message
If you
remember nothing else, remember this:
A family
that prays together stays together.
12. Conclusion
Homes are
not built by cement.
They are built by forgiveness.
They are
strengthened by sacrifice.
They are sanctified by prayer.
Illustration: The Foundation
In Gospel
of Matthew 7:24, Jesus speaks of building on rock.
A builder
once said:
“The most important part of a house is the part you don’t see — the
foundation.”
Your
foundation is Christ.
Build on
Him.
Let your
home become:
- A small Nazareth
- A small Church
- A small heaven
And one
day, your earthly family will rejoice in God’s eternal family.
13. Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You sanctified family life in Nazareth.
Enter our homes today.
Heal broken
marriages.
Comfort lonely parents.
Protect our children.
Strengthen the elderly.
Teach us
patience.
Teach us forgiveness.
Teach us sacrificial love.
As for us
and our house,
May we serve You.
May we love You.
May we reach heaven together.
Amen.
