THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

“My Eyes Have Seen Your Salvation”

(Luke 2:22–40)

Introduction: A Feast of Light, Encounter, and Offering

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, the Church celebrates a very profound and beautiful feast—the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas, the Feast of Light.

This feast stands at a crossroads:

  • It looks back to Christmas: the Child born in Bethlehem
  • It looks forward to Easter: the Child destined for the Cross

Today is not only about Mary and Joseph presenting Jesus in the Temple,
But about God presenting Himself to humanity.

At Christmas, the shepherds saw Him.
At Epiphany, the Magi adored Him.
Today, older people—Simeon and Anna—recognise Him.

This feast invites us to ask:

  • Have I truly recognised Jesus?
  • What do I still need to present to God?
  • Is Christ truly the light of my life?

I. The Law Fulfilled: Obedience Rooted in Love

(Luke 2:22–24; Leviticus 12:6–8; Exodus 13:2)

Mary and Joseph come to the Temple in obedience:

  1. For the purification of the mother
  2. For the presentation of the firstborn son

A striking truth:

  • Mary is immaculate—yet she submits
  • Jesus is the Son of God—yet He is redeemed symbolically

➡️ Why?
Because true holiness does not avoid humility; it embraces it.

Illustration

Like a teacher who follows school rules even though she knows more than the syllabus—
Mary and Joseph show us that obedience is not weakness; it is trust.

Application

  • Do I obey God only when it suits me?
  • Do I resist Church teachings because I think I “know better”?
  • True faith says: “Lord, I trust You more than my reasoning.”

II. Simeon: The Art of Waiting in Faith

(Luke 2:25–32)

Simeon is described as:

  • Righteous
  • Devout
  • Waiting for the consolation of Israel

He waited not with impatience, but with hope.

Waiting is one of the hardest spiritual disciplines:

  • Waiting for healing
  • Waiting for justice
  • Waiting for prayers to be answered

But Simeon teaches us:

God never comes late. He comes at the right moment.

The Song of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis)

“Now, Lord, you may let your servant go in peace…”

Simeon can die peacefully because he has seen Jesus.

Illustration

Many people die with fear because they chased money, power, or fame.
Simeon dies in peace because he recognised Christ.

Application

  • What am I waiting for today?
  • Am I waiting with complaint or confidence?
  • Have I allowed disappointment to harden my heart?

➡️ If Christ is in your hands, you can face any future.

III. Jesus: A Sign of Contradiction

(Luke 2:34–35)

Simeon blesses them—but then speaks a sobering prophecy:

“This child is destined for the fall and rise of many… a sign that will be opposed.”

Jesus is not a comfortable Saviour.
He:

  • Challenges hypocrisy
  • Exposes injustice
  • Demands conversion

Even today:

  • Some accept Him
  • Some reject Him
  • Some want blessings but not obedience

Illustration

Light does two things:

  1. It guides
  2. It reveals dirt

Many reject Christ not because He is false,
But because He exposes uncomfortable truths.

Application

  • Do I accept Jesus fully—or selectively?
  • Do I resist His teachings when they challenge my lifestyle?
  • Am I willing to be misunderstood for the sake of truth?

IV. Mary: The Sword That Pierces the Heart

(Luke 2:35)

“A sword will pierce your own soul, too.”

Mary’s journey is not only joy, but also pain:

  • Bethlehem → Temple → Calvary

She teaches us:

  • Faith does not remove suffering
  • Faith gives meaning to suffering

Illustration

Like a mother who watches her child suffer but stays beside him—
Mary stands under the Cross.

Application

  • Are there swords piercing your heart today?
    • Family pain
    • Illness
    • Betrayal
    • Loneliness
  • Do not run from God—stand with Mary.

➡️ Pain united with Christ becomes redemption.

V. Anna: Perseverance in Prayer

(Luke 2:36–38)

Anna is:

  • Elderly
  • Widowed
  • Constant in prayer

She did not withdraw into bitterness.
She worshipped night and day.

Fruit of perseverance:

  • She recognises Jesus immediately
  • She becomes a missionary, proclaiming Him

Application

  • Do I pray only when life is easy?
  • Have disappointments made me spiritually inactive?
  • Anna teaches us: Prayer keeps hope alive.

VI. Candlemas: Christ the Light of the World

(Luke 2:32; John 8:12)

Today we bless candles:

  • Symbol of Christ
  • Symbol of our calling

Jesus says:

“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)

Illustration

A candle does not shout—it silently burns itself to give light.

Application

  • Where is God asking you to be light?
    • In your family
    • In your profession
    • In society
  • Are you willing to be consumed in love for others?

VII. The Presentation Continues Today

Today, God asks us:

  • Present your life
  • Present your wounds
  • Present your future

Just as Mary offered Jesus,
We are invited to offer ourselves.

Romans 12:1

“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.”

Conclusion: Can You Say Simeon’s Prayer?

Can we honestly say:

“Lord, now let your servant go in peace…”

You can—
Only if Christ is truly in your hands and heart.

Let us pray today:

  • To recognise Jesus
  • To trust even in suffering
  • To become light for others

Final Prayer

Lord Jesus,
You are the Light revealed to the nations.
Help us to recognise You,
to present our lives to You,
and to walk as children of the Light,
until the day we see You face to face.
Amen.
